After the highly anticipated release of Netflix’s newest psychological thriller series, Unchosen, we saw a six-part series that told the tale of a cult and how one woman, Rosie, seeks emancipation from her stifling life within it. And in the end, along with her daughter, Grace, she finds herself free from the shackles that held her down.

But on the other hand, the final antagonist of the series, who is ultimately revealed to be Sam Devlin, has an entirely different fate from his lover Rosie. Thus, let’s take a look at what happened in the final scenes of Unchosen and understand how things turned out the way they did.
Unchosen: Sam Devlin Becomes the Leader of the Fellowship
Fra Fee in a still from Unchosen | Credits: NetflixDuring the final confrontation between the Harrison family and Sam, we see that Rosie is trying to leave the Fellowship of the Divine with her daughter, but, due to unfortunate circumstances, Sam catches up to them. Fearing that Rosie will report him to the police and send him back to prison for his hand in murdering her brother-in-law, Isaac, he tries to stop them at any means necessary.
As we see towards the end, Rosie claims she wants to get away from Sam and the rest of the Fellowship members, which sends him into a blind rage as his childhood trauma kicks in. But he manages to control himself and let Rosie go, while her husband, Adam, holds him at gunpoint. This leads Sam to admit his sins and ask Adam to call the cops on him.
But when Sam passes his phone to Adam, it is seen playing the recorded video of Adam on his knees blowing Sam by the fire, which causes a mental breakdown and a huge sense of guilt within him. Adam was already beginning to doubt himself in the position of the elder in the Fellowship, and this just sent him off the deep end, as he fell defeated and disgraced.
In the last scene, which shows the events in the Fellowship a year after the Harrison family’s destruction, we surprisingly see Sam as the new Eldar, leading the members.
While it’s not explained, the logical reason Sam attained that status is Adam’s overwhelming guilt, emotional distress, and shame, which led him to run away from the role he sought most in his life. As Sam stated in the final scenes, Adam was an extremely easy target to manipulate, which is how a criminal now held power in a cult.
What Is the Fate of Rosie and Grace in the Unchosen Finale?
While the antagonist of the series ultimately won, it doesn’t mean that our main cast of characters lost, as we saw before the credits rolled, Rosie and Grace find their way out of the Fellowship of the Divine.
In the final scenes, we saw the mother-daughter duo walk down a suburban street and knock on a house door, which is answered by Mrs. Phillips, who had left the Fellowship a short while before. Rosie decides to leave as well. It’s revealed that she has been living with her son, Matthew, and his family all this time, finally getting to spend time with her child that she had to disavow almost 17 years ago.
Thus, despite suffering hell in trying to find a better life for herself and her daughter, she and Mrs. Phillips are finally free from the shadow of the cult they once called home.
