As the Star Trek franchise gears up for a time of limbo, fans are still excited for Star Trek: Year One, a pitch made by Strange New Worlds co-creator Akiva Goldsman. The showrunner mentioned the project back in 2025, stating that it would take place after SNW and would follow Paul Wesley’s Kirk and his first year as Captain of the Enterprise.
Despite fierce campaigning and interest from the fans, Paramount has not greenlit the series yet. SNW still has two seasons left, and after the franchise is set to take a sabbatical of sorts after the second season of Starfleet Academy. Will the show really happen? Is there still hope despite the unclear future of Star Trek? Here is what we know about Year One so far.
What Is Star Trek: Year One About?
William Shatner in Star Trek | Credits: Paramount TelevisionSince Star Trek: Enterprise, the franchise has been in prequel mode, with shows like Discovery and Strange New Worlds exploring timelines before TOS. The creators of SNW have long stated that the show will end with James T. Kirk’s first day as captain of the Enterprise. Star Trek: Year One is supposed to take off from there.
Akiva Goldsman mentioned in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the show was their natural wish after SNW, and mentioned what direction it would take.
Strange New Worlds ends on Jim Kirk’s first day of work as captain of the Enterprise. And if we call ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before’ the second pilot, there’s space and time and relationships and crew that exist, that have been untold. The untold stories of Kirk’s enterprise. So that’s where we would love to situate the show, not really trying to drive into the continuity that we’ve seen, but in that gap between.
The show would take place before TOS’s ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before’ and see Kirk’s beginning days with the crew left behind by Captain Pike.
Who Will Star In Star Trek: Year One?
As mentioned before, the show has not been greenlit yet. However, the show, if made, will center around Captain Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and other characters like Sulu and Scotty. Most of these characters are in Strange New Worlds and are likely to reprise their roles in Year One. Actors like Paul Wesley and Ethan Peck have shown interest.
| Star Trek Characters | TOS Actors | SNW Actors |
| Captain James T. Kirk | William Shatner | Paul Wesley |
| Spock | Leonard Nimoy | Ethan Peck |
| Nyota Uhura | Nichelle Nichols | Celia Rose Gooding |
| Montgomery Scott | James Doohan | Martin Quinn |
| Christine Chapel | Majel Barrett | Jess Bush |
Wesley spoke about his excitement to be part of the project in 2025. He said to TV Insider,
It’s not up to me, but I have expressed my desire, probably all too often, to the showrunners and whomever else asks. I would love nothing more than to do a Kirk series along with our beloved characters in TOS and introduce the characters that we have yet to introduce in TOS, Chekov and Sulu, and, I mean, you name it. And I think it would be fantastic
Other potential cast members include Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura, and Martin Quinn as Montgomery Scott. Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike might also make an appearance, as Pike was first introduced in TOS.
