Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s multiplayer meta has settled into a clear pecking order, with five weapons doing most of the winning across ranked lobbies and public matches alike. This list counts down from a precise marksman rifle and a steady long-range LMG to the fast-handling SMGs dominating close engagements, before landing on the all-purpose assault rifle currently sitting at the top of nearly every tier list.
5 MAR-9

Firing in a controlled semi-automatic burst, the MAR-9 rewards clean aim with some of the most serious per-shot damage outside the sniper class, making it a strong pick on maps with open sightlines.
It won’t win every close-range panic fight, but in mid-to-long engagements it consistently out-trades automatic weapons when the shooter lands their hits. With the right optic and a stable barrel attachment, the MAR-9 remains one of MW4’s most satisfying weapons to master.
4 Type-73
Type 73 | Image via @Weapons From Games on YouTube The Type-73 takes the number four spot as MW4’s standout light machine gun. Built around a fast-cycling round, it offers one of the more forgiving recoil patterns in its class without sacrificing stopping power, letting players lay down sustained fire while holding down objectives or defending a flank.
Its slower mobility and longer reload keep it from matching assault rifles in frantic, fast-paced duels, but few weapons in MW4 can match its staying power in a prolonged firefight.
3 X-58 Nyx

Its fast fire rate and quick handling make it a nightmare in tight corridors and close-quarters objective modes, where winning the first shot matters more than winning the longer gunfight.
The tradeoff is a steep damage drop-off at range, so the Nyx rewards players who stay aggressive and close the distance rather than trade from afar.
2 ISO Nightshade

That versatility sets it apart from other close-range options in MW4; it’s just as comfortable rushing objectives in Hardpoint as it is holding a flank in Search and Destroy.
1 M4

It offers an almost unmatched combination of low recoil and serious damage with strong mobility, making it equally effective in close-range skirmishes and longer gunfights across the map.
There’s little reason to run anything else as a primary weapon: the M4 performs well in Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, and Search and Destroy alike, and it stays forgiving enough for newer players while still rewarding precise aim at higher skill levels.
