Big-budget AAA games tend to dominate headlines, but 2026 has given indie developers plenty of chances to steal the show. From unusual multiplayer hits to long-awaited adventures, smaller studios have delivered games that stand out for very different reasons.
Ranking these 12 wasn’t easy, especially with so many games doing their own thing. Still, some left a stronger impression than others. Here’s our list of the best indie games of 2026 so far, ranked from the best to the best-est.
12 Meccha Chameleon
Credit: lemorion_1224Meccha Chameleon turns hide-and-seek into a game of camouflage. You paint yourself to match the surroundings and hope the hunter doesn’t notice that the suspicious object in the corner is actually you. It launched in June and quickly caught on with fans of multiplayer party games.
The Steam Workshop has kept things interesting with custom maps, including stages inspired by other games and entertainment. The rules take minutes to learn, but finding a hiding spot your friends overlook is another matter. It’s a simple indie game that gets an awful lot out of one good idea.
11 Dead as Disco
Credit: Brain Jar GamesDead as Disco makes fighting look like a music video, syncing punches, dodges, and combos to the soundtrack. Brain Jar Games launched it in Early Access in May, and the rhythm-based combat is a big part of its appeal.
The September La Pantera update added Idol Dahlia, new story levels, abilities, and challenges. With its full release planned for 2027, there’s more to come, but the combination of music and melee already makes this one of the year’s most stylish indie action games.
10 Well Dweller
Credit: Kyle ThompsonKyle Thompson, creator of Crypt Custodian and Islets, returned in September with Well Dweller. You play as Glimmer, a tiny bird armed with a matchstick, trying to save his family from a wicked queen. The cute protagonist and grim fairy-tale setting make an odd but appealing combination.
The matchstick doubles as a weapon, while new abilities and collectible trinkets help you tackle the kingdom’s creatures and obstacles. Thompson has a knack for hand-drawn Metroidvanias, and Well Dweller continues that run with a darker world and plenty of unpleasant surprises.
9 Denshattack!
Credit: UndercodersUndercoders took the idea of doing skateboard tricks and applied it to a train. In Denshattack!, you flip, grind, and race across a stylized, dystopian Japan, sending a locomotive flying through courses that have little interest in keeping it on the tracks.
Chasing high scores means learning the courses and getting your tricks right, which becomes tricky when everything is moving at speed. The visual chaos can occasionally make a section frustrating, but this is one of those indie games whose central idea is so ridiculous that you can’t help rooting for it.
8 MOUSE: P.I. For Hire
Credit: Fumi GamesMOUSE: P.I. For Hire looks like a 1930s cartoon that wandered into a crime thriller and picked up an alarming number of guns. Released in April, Fumi Games’ shooter follows private investigator Jack Pepper through a corrupt city, with hand-drawn animation and jazz completing its old-school look.
The art style grabs your attention, but the shooting has to do its share of the work. Cartoon weapons, exaggerated enemies, and the detective setting make for a distinctive combination. It’s one of the year’s most memorable indie shooters, especially if you’re tired of military games promising realism and somehow ending up with “Fortnitified” skins and whatnot.
7 MIO: Memories in Orbit
Credit: Douze DixièmesMIO: Memories in Orbit sends you through the Vessel, a gigantic spaceship overtaken by vegetation and malfunctioning machines. You control a nimble android, unlock new abilities, and gradually uncover what happened to the ship and its inhabitants.
New movement skills open routes through previously inaccessible areas, making exploration a major part of the fun. Its artwork and soundtrack are excellent, although the combat can be demanding. For metroidvania fans, this January release is one of the best indie adventures of the year.
6 Mina the Hollower
Credit: Yacht Club GamesYacht Club Games, best known for Shovel Knight, released Mina the Hollower in May. This top-down action-adventure follows a whip-wielding mouse trying to save a cursed island, with retro-inspired visuals and a world full of secrets, enemies, and bosses.
Mina can burrow underground to dodge danger and reach hidden areas, adding a useful trick to the exploration aspect. The challenge can be tough, but the game’s responsive controls do make it easier to learn from your mistakes. It’s another strong release from an indie studio that knows its way around old-school action.
5 Mewgenics
Credit: Edmund McMillen & Tyler GlaielBreeding cats to build a tactical fighting force is an idea that could only come from Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel. Mewgenics launched in February, combining turn-based battles with a breeding system that passes traits between generations. Cats develop useful abilities, inherit awkward combinations, and produce unexpected outcomes that make planning ahead both necessary and occasionally hilarious.
Traits and class abilities can produce powerful combinations, but the occasional genetic disaster forces you to rethink your plans. The crude humor won’t suit everyone, and the systems take time to learn, yet there’s real depth beneath the absurd premise. It’s one of the year’s most unusual indie hits.
4 Big Walk
Credit: House House/FandomWireThe creators of Untitled Goose Game returned in August with Big Walk, a co-op adventure for groups of two to 12. You and your friends explore a large world, solve puzzles, and use tools to communicate when you can’t simply talk through a problem.
There’s no need to rush. You can spend ten minutes solving a puzzle or get sidetracked because someone has stolen your binoculars and thrown them into the sea. That freedom makes Big Walk a lovely change of pace for groups who enjoy exploring and figuring things out together.
3 Cairn
Credit: The Game BakersCairn makes climbing a mountain the entire adventure. You control Aava as she attempts to summit Mount Kami, placing her hands and feet carefully while managing supplies and deciding how much risk to take on each stretch of rock.
One bad move can undo a difficult climb, so you have to study the rock face instead of blindly pushing upward. Its slower pace won’t suit everyone, but reaching a tough section after several attempts feels rewarding. The Game Bakers have made a surprisingly gripping indie adventure out of the act of climbing.
2 Slay the Spire 2
Credit: Mega CritMega Crit faced a tough task with Slay the Spire 2: follow up one of the defining deckbuilding roguelikes without giving everyone the same game again. Its Early Access launch in March introduced new characters, cards, enemies, and environments, giving experienced players plenty of unfamiliar combinations to work out.
Co-op for up to four players is a welcome addition, too, letting you climb with friends and build around each other’s cards. The game is still in development, so its content and balance will undoubtedly change, but there’s already plenty to dig into. Just don’t be surprised when “one more run” turns into an entire evening.
1 Mortal Shell II
Credit: Cold SymmetryMortal Shell II is the kind of action RPG you’d expect to see coming from a much larger studio. Cold Symmetry has built on the original’s grim fantasy setting with a standalone sequel that puts a greater emphasis on exploration, brutal encounters, and the freedom to carve your own path through a hostile world. For an indie developer, pulling off this level of ambition is no small feat.
The soulslike combat is still unforgiving, and you’ll need to learn enemy patterns, make smart use of your Shells, and think carefully before charging into a fight. All in all, this is one game that has the atmosphere, depth, and polish to stand alongside bigger action RPGs without losing the rough edge that makes the genre so satisfying.
Which game would you put at number one, and is there another indie release from 2026 that deserves a place on this list? Let us know in the comments below!
