As Denis Villeneuve completes his Dune trilogy in December, another sci-fi franchise of his will get its next installment in one month. Blade Runner 2099, the sequel to Villeneuve’s 2017 sci-fi masterpiece, officially lands on Prime Video on November 25, 2026, with all 8 episodes of the miniseries being released at once.
Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer lead the cast, while Silka Luisa serves as showrunner. Villeneuve is not directing this chapter, but his film is the direct foundation for it. Here is what fans should know about how the new series connects to his masterpiece, and how it came together after years of delays.
Blade Runner 2099 is Set 50 Years After Denis Villeneuve’s Movie
A still from Blade Runner 2049 | Credits: Sony Pictures ReleasingDenis Villeneuve is no stranger to adapting legacy titles, with his Dune movies and the upcoming James Bond film making him one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster directors today. But it all started with Blade Runner 2049. A sequel to Ridley Scott’s 80s masterpiece, Villeneuve took on the mammoth task of continuing a classic, and he delivered.
With Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, and Oscar-winning work from Roger Deakins, Villeneuve crafted an incredible companion piece to the original film and built on the ideas of what it means to be human and the manipulative aspects of memory that were already present in Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Now, the franchise is back, this time as a miniseries. The 8-episode sequel, Blade Runner 2099, is set 50 years after Villeneuve’s movie and sees a world that has turned upside down. As opposed to the humans oppressing Replicants, the Replicants have now taken over the world. The story follows a Replicant near the end of her life who teams up with a human pretending to be one on a final mission to hunt down rogue Replicants.
While Denis Villeneuve is not part of the show creatively, as he was no doubt busy with Dune: Part Three, the original director of Blade Runner, Ridley Scott, is an executive producer on the show. A trailer for it was released earlier this month, and the visuals build on the neon, dreamy atmosphere that the Arrival filmmaker and Roger Deakins created for the movie.
Blade Runner Sequel Finally Lands on Prime Video After Delays

As amazing as Denis Villeneuve’s sequel was visually and in terms of storytelling, it underperformed at the box office, leaving the franchise a bit in limbo. A sequel was officially announced in September 2022, and it took a further four years to come to fruition.
While the series was greenlit for production, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023 delayed it, and a planned shoot in Belfast was shifted to Prague in 2024. Ridley Scott has reportedly considered directing it in the early development stages but then decided not to. Later, Jeremy Podeswa was hired to direct, but then he too left due to scheduling conflicts (via Deadline). Production finally began in 2024.
After a long wait, the series is finally ready to be seen by the world. All 8 episodes of the miniseries will be out on Prime Video on November 25, 2026. Showrunner Silka Luisa spoke about how excited she was to bring the show to the world (via EW).
There is so much legacy with Blade Runner. Every person who touched the show in any way is a huge fan. Everyone was very well aware of the weight of what we were doing, and we did it with great care. And when you’re taking on something like this, you’re very thoughtful and deliberate about each step. That is why it has taken so long, because we wanted to make sure we got it right.
The legacy of the Blade Runner franchise itself is filled with delays and postponements, with the gap between Ridley Scott’s original and Denis Villeneuve’s sequel being 35 years. Compared to that, Blade Runner 2099 is only coming after 9 years. With a stacked cast and an interesting premise, the show is one of the most exciting releases of the year.
