The film has been restored so carefully to a higher resolution that the whole process was supervised by the Director of Photography, who was involved in the making of the original movie 36 years ago.

Ahead of the film’s theatrical re-release, the film has been listed for digital purchase on Criterion. Priced at $39.96, the digital edition will be available from November 17.

However, the website also lists that the 4K digital restoration of the unrated international version was supervised by director of photography Frederick Elmes. Elmes was the DOP of the original 1990 movie, with the re-release also approved by the David Lynch Estate.

The restored version will also come with a 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack alongside some other unique features and interviews. Although these interviews won’t be a part of the theatrical re-release, it is pretty great to know that a film member of the original movie was a part of the re-release.

Despite the movie being highly famous in present times, Wild at Heart didn’t have the best reaction from critics when it was originally released in 1990.

The David Lynch film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990, and it went on to win the prestigious Palme d’Or award. Upon hearing the winner, the crowd present at the festival was more divided than cheerful.

According to Newsweek, the cheers were drowned out by the boos and jeers, which were led by famous critic Roger Ebert. At present, the film stands at a Critics’ Score of 66% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences were a little more lenient with the film, with Wild at Heart sitting at a decent score of 7.2/10 on IMDb.

Well, the theatrical re-release of the David Lynch film might just shift the perspective a little bit. However, the success of the re-release cannot be predicted until the actual release itself.
