30 Years Later, This Stephen King Movie Remains His Nastiest Body Horror Flick

3 hours ago 8

It has been 30 years since the release of Stephen King‘s Thinner movie adaptation, and the film remains one of the most controversial body horror movies of all time. With the film having its 30th anniversary today (October 25), Thinner has brought back conversations about what horror was 3 decades ago.

Being a mix of comedy and horror, Thinner found little favor amongst critics. However, the film might need a retrospection as Thinner has found a cult-classic status after all these years. Following the journey of a lawyer who is cursed by a Gypsy, the premise of the Stephen King movie isn’t exactly intriguing. Therefore, it wouldn’t be too bold to say that Thinner remains Stephen King’s most divisive movie yet.

The story of Thinner is quite bleak and unnatural, as the plot follows an obese lawyer who is cursed by a Gypsy to lose weight uncontrollably. The film has long polarized audiences and critics ever since its release in 1996.

Some critics admired the story’s pitch-black humor and praised the movie’s willingness to stay cruel, grotesque, and morally ugly. On the other hand, the film also received criticism for being uneven in tone, lurching between horror and satire, and having no characters who are redeemable.

However, as a body horror film, Thinner remains one of the most disturbing movies out there. The heavy prosthetics and imagery bring in a mix of admiration and revulsion. Although not many people are fans of this cult classic, the film is exactly the kind of movie that a Stephen King fan might like.

In fact, the film had to divert away from the brutal ending that King wrote in his novel because the test audiences were not at all fans of the book ending.

Why Thinner‘s Finale Wasn’t Faithful to Stephen King’s Novel

In the original novel by Stephen King, the curse of Billy Halleck (the lawyer) ends in a grim manner. The lawyer’s wife and daughter accidentally eat the cursed pie before he can stop them. Losing all hope, Billy Halleck sits with one slice of the pie and quietly eats it in the hope that the curse will kill him too. It’s a bleak and dark ending with a nihilistic approach that was turned into something else for the movie.

On the other hand, the 1996 Stephen King movie showcased Billy passing on the cursed pie to his wife when he suspects she is having an affair. Finding her dead body in the morning, Billy Halleck is shocked to find out that their daughter has eaten some of the cursed pie too.

However, a character named Mike Houston rings the doorbell, thus confirming Halleck’s doubts about an extramarital affair. The film closes with the lawyer and Mike Houston in a room with a piece of pie.

The film went beyond the original novel and gave in to the demonization of Billy Halleck by having his wife cheat on him. Of course, the changed finale didn’t help the film too much since it received a rating of 19% Critics’ Score on Rotten Tomatoes (as of October 25, 2026).
