The Shards Episodes 3 & 4 Ending Explained: Are Matt and Rhonda Still Alive?

FX’s The Shards gets considerably darker in Episodes 3 and 4. Well, even darker than the first two episodes. Bret’s (Igby Rigney) obsession with the Trawler (and his dismay at the lack of reaction toward the disappearances among his friends) is consuming him. He appears to be the only person who is genuinely determined to find out what happened. The show has disappointed critics (55% Tomatometer score, as of August 13, 2026), but it is a fairly absorbing guilty pleasure.

But as we saw in The Shards Episodes 1 and 2, he may not be the most reliable of protagonists. The newer episodes introduce another victim, Rhonda (Ivy Wolk), who, too, disappears under similarly disturbing circumstances. “The day fun died,” says Bret. And the final moments of Episode 4 reveal that both she and Matt (Owen Painter) are alive and are being kept in cages. While Robert Mallory (Homer Gere) was losing it under the influence of alcohol at a party for him, he was not completely off the hook yet. Bret found a cage like the one Rhonda and Matt are kept in at his aunt’s house that he visits.

What Happened to Rhonda?

Rhonda’s disappearance in this Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis-created series is similar to Matt’s disappearance. It gives a glimpse into the Trawler’s disturbing methods. The police discover blood at the scene, but there is no sign of her. Yet the most interesting part of her storyline is what Bret discovers. Again, we must say we are experiencing the story through his perspective, and it is almost certainly skewed a little. He discovers Robert going to a remote rental property. Hiding from Robert, he searches the property and finds a cage. But Rhonda is not there, and he instead discovers a school blazer stained with blood draped on a large lizard.

However, Bret (and by extension we) do not get a definitive answer. This psychological thriller series is clearly playing with the question of whether Bret is actually discovering genuine evidence or becoming consumed by his own personal dislike and suspicions of Robert. At one point, Bret says he knew Robert was a liar, implying at least one of the man’s lies was discovered later. 

Then, there is Robert’s troubled history. In the party dedicated to him and organized at Susan’s (Kaia Gerber) house, Bret meets Robert’s old “friends” (quotes because they are little more than acquaintances), who reveal that law enforcement suspected the death of his mother was no accident and that he may have pushed her. When Bret tells Robert this, he drinks more alcohol and behaves erratically before seemingly trying to drown himself.

But being suspicious does not necessarily mean guilty.

Who Attacked Debbie and Ryan, and What Does the Ending Reveal?

Speaking of erratic behavior by Robert, after he jumps into the pool, Susan and then Thom (Graham Campbell) save him. Then Susan performs mouth-to-mouth resuscitation before actually kissing him. Thom is already resentful over her attention being focused on Robert. And then the lights go out. Debbie (Hayes Warner) is by then involved in an intimate encounter with Ryan Vaughn (Daniel Dale) herself. A mysterious man armed with a knife interrupts them. Debbie later lies to Bret and says it was the assailant who made them strip to their underwear.

When Debbie screams, Bret and Thom rush to her rescue inside. They open the door, and the mysterious man (who we haven’t seen before) has not left the room. More curiously, Thom appears to know him and asks him to go. The man leaves, but not before addressing Thom by his name (indicating familiarity). The episode leaves the man’s identity and motives deliberately unclear, adding yet another potential connection to the increasingly complicated web surrounding the Trawler.

Despite everything that has happened, the final moments reveal that Matt and Rhonda are still alive. That changes the mystery considerably and keeps it interesting. Not surprisingly, The Shards topped Disney+ viewership rankings. If Matt and Rhonda are alive, the Trawler’s endgame remains unknown.
