Boruto Officially Sets Up a Powerful New Byakugan Ability Surpassing The Sharingan

The Byakugan has always been one of Naruto‘s most useful dōjutsu, but Boruto has revealed a frightening extension of what the eye can do. Through Momoshiki Otsutsuki’s power within Boruto, the Byakugan is tied to an ability that goes far beyond seeing chakra networks or distant targets: limited visions of the future.

That does not make every Byakugan automatically superior to the Sharingan, but it gives Boruto access to a form of foresight that could prove more valuable than the Sharingan’s famed predictive combat vision.

Boruto Finally Unlocks a New God-Tier Power for the Byakugan

The Byakugan’s traditional strength is perception. It provides an almost 360-degree field of vision, telescopic and X-ray-like sight, and allows its user to see the chakra pathway system and tenketsu. These abilities made the Hyūga clan’s Gentle Fist especially dangerous because a skilled user could attack an opponent’s chakra network directly. The Dojutsu itself originated with the Ōtsutsuki and later became closely associated with the Hyūga.

But Momoshiki’s version has another trick. After obtaining Momoshiki’s Kāma, Boruto eventually gained access to his Ōtsutsuki abilities. Boruto inherited Hyūga blood through Hinata, while his Kāma transformed him into a complete Ōtsutsuki after Momoshiki used the remaining data to reconstruct his body. This transformation fundamentally changed Boruto’s status. Momoshiki’s Byakugan can perceive fragmented visions of the future, including people’s fates.

Before his death, Momoshiki told Boruto that although he could not see his own fate, he could see Boruto’s. His prediction that Boruto’s “blue eyes” would take everything from him became one of the manga’s biggest mysteries. Later, Boruto gained access to Momoshiki’s foresight, and the visions were fragmented glimpses of events surrounding him in Chapter 75.

That distinction matters: the manga does not establish that ordinary Hyūga Byakugan users can see the future. This is specifically associated with Momoshiki’s extraordinary Byakugan and his connection to Boruto. Basically, this Kekkei Genkai somewhat got nerfed in the Naruto series and finally got an Uchiha-level boost in the sequel.

How the Byakugan’s New Ability Could Surpass the Sharingan

This is where the comparison becomes genuinely interesting. The Sharingan’s predictive advantage comes from perception. It can read an opponent’s movements, analyse techniques, and help its user anticipate attacks. That makes it terrifying in a fight, but it remains fundamentally reactive: the user is interpreting information from the present to predict what happens next.

Momoshiki’s foresight is different. If Boruto can reliably access it, he is not merely reading an enemy’s movements; he can receive information about future events and possible outcomes. In strategic terms, that could be vastly more valuable than predicting a punch or copying a technique. The manga has not established that Boruto can freely see any future he wants, nor has it declared the Byakugan superior to the Sharingan. Its visions are limited and fragmented, while advanced Sharingan evolutions possess abilities the Byakugan does not.

There is another reason this development matters. Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is increasingly treating dōjutsu as evolving rather than static powers. Sarada’s Mangekyō Sharingan has already received a major new ability, while the Rinnegan’s past evolution demonstrates how dramatically ocular powers can change under extraordinary circumstances. On VIZ Media, the sequel has reached Chapter 36 as of July 2026, leaving plenty of room for Boruto’s Ōtsutsuki abilities to develop further.

For now, the safest conclusion is also the most exciting one: the Byakugan has gained a capability that the Sharingan’s conventional predictive vision cannot match. And if Boruto ever learns to control Momoshiki’s fragmented foresight consistently, the Byakugan could become one of the most strategically dangerous eyes in the entire Naruto universe.
