Bit Reactor earlier confirmed that Star Wars Zero Company will come out with a permadeath system, and the studio isn’t shy about recommending players keep it switched on. The confirmation came directly from Narrative Director Aaron Contreras during a recent preview event Q&A attended by Wccftech, where he broke down exactly how the mechanic works and what happens narratively when a squadmate falls in battle for good.
How Permadeath Works in Star Wars Zero Company
There’s perma death in the game | Credits: Bit ReactorOn being asked if main story characters can genuinely die and stay dead, Contreras confirmed that permadeath is a real, functioning system in Zero Company rather than a cosmetic feature. Players can toggle it on or off from the settings menu, and he was direct about the studio’s stance, telling the Wccftech team the following:
“Permadeath is a thing in Zero Company. You can toggle it on or off, but we recommend playing with it on for the most intense experience. If Hawks, who’s your player character, if they die, it’s game over, and you need to restart that mission, but every other character in the game is vulnerable, with certain exceptions.
There’s one built-in safety net around these mechanics. Hawks, the player’s fully customizable commanding officer, cannot be permanently lost. If he falls in combat, the mission simply ends and restarts rather than writing the character out of the story. Every other operator in Zero Company doesn’t get that same protection once they’re fully folded into the squad.
However, the narrative director did state that there is an exception for newly introduced characters, where if the player manages to lose them during the very mission they are introduced in, or in a mission that’s built around the character, then the mission simply restarts rather than the player losing the character forever.
Why The Studio Wants This Feature Left On
Star Wars Zero Company | Credits: Bit ReactorBit Reactor recommends leaving the permadeath feature left on, and the reason why lies behind how the studio is blending tactical combat with character-driven storytelling. Rather than treating permadeath as a punishing side system fixed onto the campaign, the team built it into the emotional core of Zero Company instead, where losing a bonded operator is meant to carry real narrative weight.
For players who’d rather experience the story without that pressure, the upcoming game isn’t going to force any player to leave the feature on. Difficulty options in the game range from offering a story-focused setting through harder tiers for those who want it, and permadeath can be switched off on whichever difficulty level a player chooses.
With Star Wars Zero Company launching soon on August 27, this confirmation gives fans one of the clearest pictures yet of how Bit Reactor is trying to fuse the XCOM-style tactical strikes with a more cinematic and character-first Star Wars story.
