With all six episodes of the new psychological thriller series Unchosen released recently, many fans who were eagerly awaiting the series may have already binge-watched the show by now. And while the series may have been mostly self-explanatory, there are still questions about it since those explanations may be short or implied without outright dictation.
Therefore, let’s take a look at some of the most asked questions about the recently released Netflix series and answer some of the most asked questions regarding the narrative of the show and details that may have slipped your radar.
1 Is Unchosen Based on a Real Life Story?
While the series may focus on the events and happenings that have usually been associated with cults and religious zealotry, Unchosen isn’t directly adapted from any particular real-life events that featured characters and/or stories similar to what we see on-screen.
And even in the opening credits, they state that the fictional events that happen within the mini-series are an amalgamation of stories and events that can be witnessed around cults. The credits also inform about almost 2,000 cult-like organisations that are present in the United Kingdom, from which the narrative is inspired.
2 How Did Sam Escape Prison?
Fra Fee in a still from Unchosen | Credits: NetflixWhile it was explained in brief in the mini-series in the beginning, it was a very brief mention that could have swept past the viewers. Basically, despite being in prison, Sam was under the Release on Temporary License (ROTL), which is a type of license given to inmates in the UK allowing eligible inmates to leave prison during the day for work, education, or to maintain family ties, and return at night.
And during his shift at a local fish processing plant, he was attacked by a man who wanted to kill him, but in the end, Sam killed his assailant in self-defence. And fearing the repercussions of his actions in extended sentencing, he decided to make a run for it.
3 Why Was Isaac Forced to Drink Alcohol During His Repentance?
Asa Butterfield and Aston McAuley in a still from Unchosen | Credits: NetflixAfter finding a smartphone on his brother, Isaac, which is considered a sin in the community of the Fellowship, Adam reports his transgressions to the leader of the cult, Mr. Phillips. Therefore, after he’s made to spend a day in solitary confinement, he’s brought before everyone to repent.
And here, he’s given glass after glass of whiskey (considered by most people to be a party), until he’s so inebriated that it starts acting like a truth serum, and he loses all his composure. This not only brings out his ongoing affair with an outsider, called by the community as an Unchosen, but also makes his eldest son, Anthony, hate him for sinning in the eyes of the Fellowship.
4 Why Did Adam R*pe Rosie?
A still from Unchosen | Credits: Netflix One of the most disturbing scenes that took place during the series was when Adam imposed himself on Rosie and, against her will, forced her into sexual intercourse without her consent. This happens after Rosie is found out to be the one who helped Isaac escape from his home and go live with his lover, Chelsey, outside of the community.
This is when we truly see the twisted and manipulative side of Adam on full display, where his religious zealotry subconsciously makes him commit such a horrible act, as, by his own sick reasoning, this was a way of punishing his wife, who is too willful. In fact, actor Asa Butterfield talked about shooting this scene, claiming that it was extremely disturbing (via The Times).
5 Why Was Sam Sent to Prison?
Fra Fee in a still from Unchosen | Credits: NetflixThroughout the series, we get a picture of how, despite looking and sounding innocent, even Sam is extremely manipulative and opportunistic, which starts with him either obscuring facts or straight-up lying. And among his lies, he initially tells Rosie that he went to prison due to getting in a fight over a girl.
But the truth comes out as even more malevolent since, in reality, he didn’t go to jail for aggravated assault or a similar charge, but for murdering his ex-girlfriend, Quinn, when she wanted to leave him for another boy when they were both 16 years old.
6 Was Adam Hiding His Homosexuality?
Asa Butterfield in a still from Unchosen | Credits: NetflixIn a shocking turn of events, in Episode 4, we see Adam giving oral sex to Sam in a moment of weakness and self-doubt, which startled everyone due to its coming out of almost nowhere. Thus, people started to wonder whether, despite having a daughter with Rosie, Adam was a closeted gay man.
And while it’s never explicitly stated in the series, there are some instances in the series that point to this being the truth, where the most significant hint comes from his self-doubts during his shepherding of a departing soul in Episode 4 itself. At the same time, conversations with Isaac also point towards the fact that his brother knew Adam was at least bisexual.
7 Where Is Mr. And Mrs. Phillips’ Son?
Siobhan Finneran in a still from Unchosen | Credits: NetflixThe series does a good job of dropping plot points throughout the narrative and explaining them via dropping hints and visual cues. Towards the end, we come to know that Mr. and Mrs. Phillips, who were the leading figures in the Fellowship, had a son named Matthew, whom they had to disavow and drive away from the community.
And while it isn’t explicitly stated, through visual cues and verbal communications, it’s implied that his being gay, or wanting to leave the Fellowship to live with an outsider, or even both, were the reasons why his parents had to disavow him and make him leave, while keeping no contact with him either.
8 What Happened to Adam in the Unchosen Finale?
As we saw in the finale of Unchosen, Sam shockingly becomes the leader of the Fellowship of the Divine a year after both Mrs. Phillips and Rosie, with her daughter, leave the community to live their lives outside. But among these events, Adam’s fate remains unknown.
The logical answer is that since Sam recorded their little intimate event by the fire, he used it to blackmail Adam into giving him the leadership role so he could live outside the visible surveillance of the police.
It can also mean that from his own sense of overbearing guilt and shame, Adam completely broke inside, and either left the Fellowship as well, or worse, departed the mortal realm on his own volition.
