Star Wars: The Ninth Jedi Ending Explained: Did Kara Finally Defeat Nawaam?

With all 8 episodes of the Star Wars: The Ninth Jedi anime adaptation dropping on August 5, 2026, on Hulu and Disney+, we get one of the very recent and marvelous narratives of the franchise, wrapped in a beautiful Japanese animation style by Production I.G. The episodes were really intriguing and carried a rather slow but steady pacing until we reached the ending.

Episode 8, titled “The Ninth Jedi“, wasn’t really typically rushed or overexerted; it was rather paced exactly how it needed to be. With that being said, many of you have already seen the episodes, while many of you haven’t. So, for anyone who has even the slightest confusion, here’s the Star Wars: The Ninth Jedi ending explained.

Kara And Nawaam Finally Face Off With Matching Silver Blades

By the time Kara and her crew storm Nawaam’s ship, there’s no more room for hesitation. She’s got Ethan, her father Zhima, Homen, Four-Nines, and Bee-Toh at her side. Zhima, still weak but done hiding, tells the group to leave Nawaam to him and go secure the Kyber crystal instead.

Nawaam doesn’t take long to show up, though, and he shows up alone. Kara doesn’t hold back her anger, either. As far as she knows, this man murdered her father, and she tells him so to his face before the others peel off to deal with the crystal. What follows is Kara and Nawaam squaring off with matching silver lightsabers, a detail that matters more than it looks. Neither blade has picked a side yet.

The fight spills out onto the roof of the ship, and for a good stretch of it, Nawaam is simply the better fighter. He’s faster, more controlled, and Kara is on the back foot more than once. But something shifts mid-duel. Her blade turns green, and so does her focus. She starts landing hits that actually connect, even if they’re not finishing blows yet. Nawaam’s saber, meanwhile, burns red.

The two go back and forth until Kara finally drives her blade through his stomach. He drops. It looks final. Except a flashback fills in what actually happened in that instant: Kara pulled her lightsaber back through the Force the second before the killing strike would’ve landed. Nawaam is hurt, not dead, and he knows it. He tells her as much, conceding the fight rather than dying in it. On top of that, it turns out Zhima is alive too, since Nawaam never actually killed his old master the way everyone assumed all along. Two “deaths” in this story, and neither one of them turns out to be real.

The Kyber Crystal Finally Gets Smashed To Pieces Once And For All

While Kara’s handling Nawaam, the rest of the group reaches the Kyber crystal, and this is where things almost go horribly wrong. Bee-Toh, trying to help, fires directly into it, and the crystal answers back with a beam that wipes out everything past the ship’s atmosphere in an instant. That’s terrifying enough on its own, and it’s apparently only a sliver of what the thing can actually do if it’s ever fully unleashed.

Ethan’s the one who figures out that brute force with a blaster isn’t the answer here. He swings the hilt of his lightsaber into the crystal instead, and it cracks under the impact. The others catch on fast, joining in and hammering away at it the same way, again and again, until the whole thing finally gives out and shatters completely. No more superweapon, no more countdown to a planet getting wiped off the map, and no more leverage for anyone trying to pick up where Nawaam left off.

So does Kara “defeat” Nawaam? Sort of, but not in the way the title makes it sound. She beats him in a fight, sure, but she doesn’t kill him, and that choice ends up being the actual point of the episode. Everyone she loves turns out to have survived something that looked like a death sentence, and the galaxy’s biggest threat gets destroyed by teamwork rather than one big heroic strike from Kara alone. It’s a finale that cares more about restraint than revenge, which fits Kara’s whole arc a lot better than a clean kill ever could have.

Star Wars: The Ninth Jedi Overall Review

Star Wars: The Ninth Jedi earns its runtime by actually slowing down and letting its characters breathe, which is rare for a show built around lightsaber duels and a planet-cracking superweapon. Kara’s arc lands because the finale refuses to give her a clean revenge kill, and that choice says more about her growth than any fight choreography could. The animation holds up throughout, especially once the action moves to the rooftop, where the shifting blade colors do a lot of storytelling without a single line of dialogue.

Where the season stumbles a bit is pacing in the middle stretch, where some side characters like Homen and Four-Nines get less to do than you’d want given the ensemble setup. Bee-Toh’s near-disaster with the kyber crystal is a fun scare, but it also highlights how little time the show spends explaining the crystal’s rules before asking viewers to be terrified of it.

Still, the ending sticks the landing emotionally. Two people believed dead turn out alive, the villain gets humbled instead of erased, and the threat goes out with a literal crack rather than a bang. It’s a satisfying, if slightly uneven, close to the story.
