Naruto: Every Major Clan That Went Nearly Extinct, Ranked

Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto has always been a mix of tragedy and deep-seated political warfare – from simple friendly rivalries that escalated beyond comprehension to a political decision that resulted in the near obliteration of a reputed clan. While many minor clan disappearances are easily lost in the pages, some major ones still strike us whenever we re-read the story.

That being said, most of the clans mentioned in this list have only a handful of survivors; some even ended completely before our very eyes. Without further ado, here is every major clan in the Naruto series that went almost extinct, ranked by their last known status.

5 Uzumaki Clan: Scattered Survivors After Uzushiogakure’s Fall

Uzushiogakure got wiped off the map by a combined assault from the neighbouring villages and surrounding nations, all of whom were nervous about how powerful Uzumaki Fuinjutsu had become. The village fell, but the bloodline didn’t die with it.

Kushina Uzumaki escaped to Konoha before it happened; Nagato grew up around Amegakure; and Karin turned up years later, working with Orochimaru and then Sasuke. Naruto himself is living proof the clan never actually disappeared, just scattered. More known survivors pop up here than in any other entry on this list, so the Uzumaki rank as the least “extinct” of the bunch.

4 Senju Clan: Konoha’s Founders Who Vanished Without a Trace

It’s wild that the clan which literally founded Konoha alongside the Uchiha basically vanished within a couple generations. Hashirama and Tobirama, the first two Hokage, both died relatively young, and Tsunade’s little brother Nawaki was killed in battle as a kid chasing the same dream.

Tsunade is the only Senju anyone in the story actually interacts with, but the series never confirms she’s the last one, just that nobody else with the name ever shows up again. Nobody can confirm what really happened to the Senjus, which makes this disappearance even eerier than a clean extinction.

3 Uchiha Clan: Itachi’s Massacre Nearly Wiped Out the Bloodline

The Uchiha were one of Konoha’s two founding clans, loaded with Sharingan users and generations of resentment toward the Senju. That tension boiled over when Itachi Uchiha, acting on orders from the village elders, slaughtered nearly the entire clan in a single night, leaving only his younger brother alive.

Sasuke Uchiha spent years believing he was the last Uchiha standing, unaware Obito Uchiha had also quietly survived elsewhere. It’s one of the most devastating single events in the whole series. Sasuke lived long enough to rebuild the clan with his daughter Sarada, so this one lands just below the truly extinct entries.

2 Kaguya Clan: A Reckless Attack That Ended In Total Extinction

The Kaguya clan basically brought about their own downfall. Notorious for their savage, no-strategy fighting style, they decided to attack Kirigakure just to prove how vicious they were, and it went about as well as you’d expect. The entire clan was slaughtered except for one person, Kimimaro, who didn’t share their bloodlust and managed to survive.

Orochimaru later took him in, and Kimimaro spent years as the sole Kaguya alive, until a terminal illness finally caught up to him too. Kimimaro’s death didn’t just end his life; it erased the entire clan for good, which is why it sits comfortably as the close second.

1 Yuki Clan: Haku’s Bloodline Wiped Out By Kirigakure’s Purges

The Yuki clan carried the Ice Release Kekkei Genkai, and that alone made them targets when Kirigakure’s civil war ended, and hatred toward bloodline users exploded into open persecution. Survivors scattered and hid their identities, including Haku’s mother, whom his own father murdered once their secret got out.

Haku himself grew up believing he was the last of his kind, eventually becoming Zabuza Momochi’s tool and dying alongside him in battle against Team 7. This is the only clan on the list wiped out through deliberate, targeted persecution rather than war or a single massacre, which is what earns it the top spot.
