Ryan Reynolds Confirms Deadpool Will Be a Supporting Character in Next Movie

Ryan Reynolds has hinted at the future of Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during his recent interview with Willie Geist for Sunday Today. When the actor was asked about his Merc with a Mouth role, he shared that there is a possibility of a fourth Deadpool movie on the horizon.

However, he added that he didn’t want to take the central role in the movies any time soon. He shared that if Deadpool were ever to come back for another movie, the character would appear in a supporting role alongside a team. Reynolds shared:

While we don’t know any details about this “group” that Reynolds is talking about, we are already excited about all the possibilities. Further, the actor shared that he had “some stuff kind of written,” adding excitement for this potential future project.

Why Is Ryan Reynolds Taking a Step Back With Deadpool?

Last year, Ryan Reynolds shared the same thing about Deadpool’s future with Andrew Garfield during Variety’s Actors on Actors. He also gave a few reasons as to why he believed he needed to take a step back with the character. He shared that the work behind making his superhero movies was very tedious in nature. He added that he didn’t want to be an absentee parent in the lives of his and Blake Lively‘s children.

He further shared that he gave his all for his last movie, which wasn’t made with the intention of being a commercial for further sequels. He went for the complete experience, sharing, “It’s important sometimes to make space for a movie to just be a movie.”

And thirdly, he shared that he can’t create another situation to make Deadpool the underdog and make him the central character in the story. He explained that Wade Wilson becomes the central character when “you take everything away from him.” Reynolds added, “You have to create a situation where he’s so much the underdog, and I don’t think I can do that again.” At the time, he also mentioned that he would love to play a supporting character in a Gambit movie.

Potential Avengers and X-Men Team-Up in Ryan Reynolds’s MCU Future

While Ryan Reynolds is not taking on a central role in the MCU, his comment about being part of a group has ignited talks about his potential appearances in Avengers: Doomsday, Avengers: Secret Wars, or the upcoming X-Men movie.

Last year, Reynolds ignited the rumors of his appearance in the upcoming Avengers movie after he shared a cryptic post on Instagram. His post showed an Avengers logo that had been vandalized with red graffiti over it. Fans assumed it was a sign that Deadpool was returning to the Marvel universe.

Later, THR’s email newsletter Heat Vision shared that sources have confirmed to them that Deadpool will appear in Doomsday (via @THR on X). The newsletter said, “Sources tell Heat Vision that yes, Deadpool will appear in Avengers: Doomsday. (Don’t expect him to actually be joining the Avengers team, though.)”

It was also reported last year that Reynolds’ fourth Deadpool movie would feature other X-Men characters (via THR). The report said:

A popular fan theory is that this Deadpool/X-Men team-up will be adapted from Marvel Comics’ Uncanny X-Force. The report very much aligns with what Reynolds has said about the character’s future in recent interviews. Fans hope to see him and Hugh Jackman back in the Avengers movie, after their $1.3 billion success with Deadpool & Wolverine.
