Spoiler Warning for Euphoria Season 3
Euphoria fans might be asking a serious question right now after today’s episode: Was Eric Dane, who played Cal Jacobs, battling ALS during filming? The actor passed away on February 19, 2026, from respiratory failure related to ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as confirmed by People.
The disease is defined by the progressive loss of both upper and lower motor neurons, which not only affects a person’s mobility but also their thinking and behavior. Dane’s appearance in the recent episode raised speculations among the community about whether he was suffering from the symptoms during filming days for the HBO series.
Here’s what’s known—and what’s not—about the actor’s health during production.
When Did Eric Dane Film His Euphoria Season 3 Scenes?
Dane’s Cal Jacobs returns in Euphoria Season 3’s second episode, marking the actor’s first posthumous television appearance.
As we know, the actor passed away in February after battling ALS. He had revealed his diagnosis in April 2025—just days before filming for the season began—meaning all of his scenes were shot after he knew about his condition and had shared it publicly.
In an exclusive interview with People, he said:
I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter. I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week.
It remains uncertain whether he continued filming through the production’s reported wrap in November 2025 (via Deadline).
Did Eric Dane Have ALS While Filming Euphoria?
Eric Dane in Euphoria / Credits: HBOAs mentioned, Dane knew about his illness even before returning to work. However, this wasn’t the first time he had experienced the symptoms. In fact, it started about a year and a half prior, perhaps late 2023 or early 2024.
He felt some weakness in his right hand, and by June 2025, it had completely stopped working, leaving him with only his left side functioning. Speaking with Variety, show creator Sam Levinson spoke about how Dane battled through ALS complications during filming:
When he showed up, I noticed that his speech was a little slurred. He was a bit self-conscious, and I said, ‘This works perfectly. We’re gonna put five beer bottles in front of you, and you’re about to say all of the sh*t you would never say if you were sober.’ And we just had a blast shooting. We had 28 cast members on Saturday for the wedding. There’s all these people around, and he just showed up with such grace and dignity. He’s a consummate professional all the way through, and I miss him.
Despite his struggle, Dane made sure not to disappoint his co-workers and especially the fans who had been waiting for the new season.
Will Eric Dane Appear in Future Euphoria Episodes?
Eric Dane and Jacob Elordi in Euphoria / Credits: HBOFollowing Dane’s tragic passing, it is both bittersweet and heartbreaking to see him return as his character in the show, a role he completed filming entirely before his death. While HBO has not released a formal episode count of his remaining scenes, the Episode 3 preview trailer clearly suggests his presence at Nate and Cassie’s wedding.
What we know is that his total screen time will naturally be limited to what was already shot. After those appearances, there won’t be any new scenes beyond Season 3.
Many fans will certainly find it meaningful if the show acknowledges this as his final on-screen performance, knowing he made use of his own real-life symptoms to enhance his “wasted” acting at the wedding scene, believable.
