At about 12:45 a.m., a 9-1-1 caller reported that a large barn and possibly nearby buildings were on fire south of Metcalfe on Eighth Line Road, an area with no fire hydrants, OFS said in a media release.

While the barns’ owners removed most of the animals in time, one horse and several chickens perished, the fire service said in a post on the social-media platform X. The post also said that no civilians or firefighters were injured.

Aside from the heavy flames, firefighters dealt with structures collapsing, hydro wires and a fuel tank exposed on one building until the fire was under control just after 2 a.m.

A fire services investigator was assigned to determine the cause and origin of the blaze.
