Ottawa correctional officer charged with sexual assault

A correctional officer in Ottawa has been charged with sexual assault and for having “inappropriate interactions with inmates.”

Mcintyre Render, 27, is facing charges of sexual assault, voyeurism, and breach of trust by a public officer in connection with the duties of his work.

Court documents show Render is alleged to have committed a sexual assault in the Ottawa’s east region between Aug. 1, 2024 and Nov. 30, 2024.

In the same time period, the court documents allege he “being a correctional officer, in connection with the duties of their office, (did) commit a breach of trust, namely by accessing and disclosing confidential information and, by having inappropriate interactions with inmates.”

The third allegation says he “did, without lawful excuse, surreptitiously observe” a woman “who was in circumstances that gave rise to a reasonable expectation of privacy given that she was in a place in which a person could reasonably be expected to be nude.”

The woman is not named in the charging documents, and her identity is protected by a publication ban standard in sexual assault cases.

The court documents do not provide the circumstances surrounding the allegations.

He was arrested on May 30, 2025. The public was not informed of the charges.

Ottawa police would not comment on the case or confirm whether they were the ones to make the arrest.

“The Ottawa Police Service does not release information about named individuals,” Julie Kavanagh, a spokesperson for the police service, said in an email.

Ontario’s public salary disclosure showed Render, listed as a General Duty Officer with the Ministry of the Solicitor General, made $102,283.34 in 2024.

He was not included on the list in 2025, the year he was arrested. The ministry said he no longer works for them, but provided no other details on the case, including the conditions of his departure.

“We can confirm that this individual is no longer employed by the ministry. As this matter is before the courts, it would be inappropriate to comment further,” a spokesperson confirmed.

The allegations have not been tested in court.

The case is scheduled for a five-week, judge-alone trial beginning in September 2027.
