Miley Cyrus believes her late godmother, Dolly Parton, is still watching over her. During one of her Hollywood Bowl concerts in Los Angeles on Sunday night, the singer told fans that Parton recently paid her a visit from the afterlife.
Holding a heart-shaped frame with Parton’s photo, Cyrus explained that the strange moment happened “after playing a show.” It started with a very special gift that Parton had given her. Cyrus shared (via EW/Instagram):
I actually have a Dolly mannequin in my bedroom. She gave it to me for Christmas. It’s dressed like her, it’s built like her. When I was by myself, I actually took my phone and I played ‘Jolene’ for her on video, holding it up to the mannequin, and lit a candle. I put a flower down for her.
Cyrus then said she silently asked Parton for a sign. She shared, “I said, ‘Dolly, if you’re here right now, flicker the lights.'” She further shared:
I didn’t say anything out loud, but the entire hallway started flickering.
Parton died on August 25 at the age of 80, following a brief battle with cancer. The country icon was one of Cyrus’ closest companions and collaborators, and the singer has spoken openly about her grief in the weeks since.
Miley Cyrus Says Dolly Parton Is With Her on Stage
For Miley Cyrus, the flickering lights were more than just a coincidence. She took it as proof that Dolly Parton is still by her side, even during her performances. The singer also claimed she was not alone when it happened. Pointing to one of her collaborators on stage, she said he could “vouch” for her story.
Cyrus explained, “He was there, but he didn’t know what I said,” meaning he saw the lights flicker without knowing she had asked Parton for a sign. Cyrus went on to claim:
So, I know she’s here with me tonight.
Cyrus admitted that the concerts have not been easy for her emotionally. She told the crowd:
I have been feeling some of the feelings that I’m most afraid of, but having her here with me is getting me through.
She then dedicated the night to both her fans and her godmother. She shared, “No matter what it takes, this show is for you and for Dolly.” The Hollywood Bowl shows are part of Cyrus’ run in support of her new album, Bass Persuades. The record was released in September and went straight to No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Miley Cyrus Earlier Broke Down in Tears Over Dolly Parton

At the first of her Hollywood Bowl concerts, which was also her first concert in nearly four years, the singer broke down in tears while talking about her godmother (via EW).
Cyrus explained that the venue holds a special place in her heart. It was the only place she ever got to see Parton perform live. She had asked to watch from the crowd instead of backstage, simply wanting to enjoy the show like everyone else.
Parton agreed, but had other plans. She opened her set with The Best of Both Worlds, the Hannah Montana theme song, and told the audience that Cyrus was sitting among them. Cyrus joked that the move “defeated the entire purpose” and drew an “obnoxious” amount of attention her way. Looking back now, she treasures that memory. She shared:
I feel her, now more than ever. Knowing that I get to share this story with you all, it makes that night very worth it. This memory is gold to me.
Cyrus closed her tribute with a promise that their bond will never break. She shared, “Me and Dolly, we are eternal. Nothing in this life could tear us apart. And I’m gonna see her again. I can’t f**king wait because I miss her.” She then performed a heartfelt rendition of Jolene.
