After 14 years of serialization, the unofficial Attack on Titan rival, Seraph of the End, has reached the end of its run, bringing a long chapter in Shueisha’s Jump SQ. magazine to a close. The announcement is a bittersweet one for readers who have followed Yuichiro Hyakuya’s fight against the vampires since 2012, as pointed out by the @WSJ_manga account on X:
Seraph of the End by Daisuke Furuya, Takaya Kagami, and Yamato Yamamoto will be ending with Chapter 161 in upcoming Jump SQ. Issue #1, out on December 4th, 2026. https://t.co/ZJEZeFGvKI
— Shonen Jump News (@WSJ_manga) November 3, 2026It also brings the series back into conversation with Attack on Titan, its frequent point of comparison during the boom in dark, post-apocalyptic anime and manga. Although the two stories took very different paths, they shared an era, a grim setting, and a young hero driven by loss.
Seraph of the End Manga Is Finally Approaching Its Ending
Seraph of the End | Credits: ShueishaWritten by Takaya Kagami, illustrated by Yamato Yamamoto, and storyboarded by Daisuke Furuya, Seraph of the End debuted in September 2012. Its premise was bleak: a mysterious virus wipes out most of the adult population, and vampires emerge from underground to take control of the surviving children.
Yuichiro Hyakuya is among them. He grows up in the same underground city as the other children from his orphanage, including his closest friend, Mikaela. Their attempt to escape ends in tragedy. Yuichiro reaches the surface, but the vampires kill the others, or so he believes. Four years later, he joins the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, determined to destroy the vampires. Mikaela, however, has survived as a vampire, making the mission personal.
Yuichiro eventually joins the Moon Demon Company and fights alongside other young soldiers. But the conflict does not remain a straightforward battle between humans and vampires. Demons, secret experiments, the Seraph project, and powerful figures complicate the conflict. Through it all, Yuichiro’s loyalty to the people he considers family remains at its heart.
The ending had been signposted earlier this year. When Volume 36 went on sale in Japan on May 1, Kagami wrote in the afterword that the next volume would be the last. That made Volume 37 the planned final collection. The latest announcement now confirms that the manga’s long run has reached its conclusion. The series’ monthly chapters kept the story moving through revelations, while its central friendship gave the plot a steady emotional anchor.
How Seraph of the End Became an Attack on Titan Rival
The Attack on Titan comparison was easy to understand when Seraph of the End first gained attention. Both series put humanity in a desperate position, facing enemies that seem far stronger than ordinary people. In Attack on Titan, those enemies are the Titans; in Seraph of the End, they are vampires who have taken over the world. Both stories also begin with young protagonists whose lives are shattered by the creatures they come to hate.
Yuichiro and Eren Yeager share that early drive for revenge. Each is shaped by the loss of loved ones and throws himself into a fight much larger than he first understands. There were differences, too. Attack on Titan gradually widened into a story about nations, history, war, and the meaning of freedom. Seraph of the End leaned more heavily into supernatural fantasy, with vampire hierarchies, demon-possessed weapons, and the mystery surrounding the Seraph experiments. The resemblance never made the stories interchangeable.
WIT Studio, which had brought AoT to television, also produced Seraph of the End‘s anime in 2015. The adaptation ran for 24 episodes across two cours and introduced Yuichiro’s story to viewers who might not have picked up the manga. It has not received a further season, leaving much of the manga unadapted. Viewers often made the comparison in the mid-2010s, when grim survival stories were a major part of the conversation. Their shared atmosphere made the connection natural, even though their worlds and ambitions were distinct.
