Marvel Confirms Next Movie Re-release After Avengers: Endgame Encore

Fans who can’t get enough of Tom Holland‘s web-slinger are in for a treat. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is reportedly heading back to theaters with extra footage, according to Deadline. The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film is already the highest-grossing movie ever at the domestic box office and the third-highest-grossing worldwide.

There’s no release date yet, but Sony will likely target a quiet stretch at the box office when it can get as many premium large-format screens as possible. The studio has done this before, bringing No Way Home back over Labor Day weekend in 2022 for a $9.3 million domestic run.

The news follows the Avengers: Endgame Encore re-release. That re-release also had extra footage. Endgame‘s original cut ran 3 hours and 1 minute, and Encore added 6 minutes and 17 seconds of Avengers: Doomsday footage for viewers in Disney’s InfinityVision format. Meanwhile, regular screens got just over 2 minutes. At 2 hours and 25 minutes, Brand New Day has plenty of room for more scenes.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Re-Release May Feature Daredevil Character

The biggest addition fans can look forward to in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is Rosario Dawson‘s Claire Temple. The character is a nurse who patches up injured vigilantes in Marvel’s Netflix corner. She became a connecting link between the shows, appearing in the first two seasons of Daredevil, as well as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders.

Dawson previously revealed that she filmed a scene for Brand New Day, only for it to be removed. Speaking at GalaxyCon Raleigh, she told fans, “Well … I’m going to have to say: I could have said Spider-Man. I even shot a scene in the new ‘Spider-Man’ movie, but I got cut out” (via THR).

The actress joked about being rejected by Spider-Man, but added that she hopes to play Claire again someday. According to TheWrap, the deleted scene showed Claire treating Peter Parker in the hospital after one of his brutal fights. Writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers said it was trimmed to keep the movie flowing.

Claire’s return would mark the character’s first appearance on the big screen and tie Holland’s Spider-Man even closer to Marvel’s street-level heroes. Deadline also hints that Claire isn’t the only surprise, with more unseen footage expected in the new cut.

Brand New Day May Enter a Box Office Race With Avengers: Endgame

The timing of this re-release is hard to ignore. Disney just hit it big with Avengers: Endgame Encore, which earned $86 million globally, including $26 million domestically, in its re-release weekend (via Deadline). The new numbers take Endgame‘s all-time total to $2.885 billion after seven years, still keeping it the second-highest-grossing movie ever.

The re-release comes ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, which hits theaters on December 18, which gives it a promotional purpose as well. However, Brand New Day is still going strong in theaters worldwide. As of the latest count, it has earned $2.495 billion globally, becoming Sony’s biggest movie ever.

Still, the web-slinger has a long way to go if he wants to catch Endgame‘s numbers. The gap between the two films currently stands at $389.7 million worldwide, and the Avengers movie’s latest boost has only made that target harder to reach.
