Mindhunter Season 3 Fate Seemingly Sealed After David Fincher’s Decision

If you are a Mindhunter fan, we have some bad news for you. Bloomberg has reported that David Fincher, the man behind the gripping crime thriller, has decided not to renew his contract with Netflix after the current agreement expires in 2027.

Fans have been waiting for Mindhunter Season 3 since Season 2 premiered on August 16, 2019. Seven years later, we now know that we might never get the answers to the questions left at the end of the last season. David Fincher signed an exclusive deal with Netflix in 2020, and since then has made three movies: Mank (2020), The Killer (2023), and The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, which will premiere in theaters on November 25. However, he had remained deeply involved with the streamer even before signing the four-year deal. Mindhunter came before his agreement, and he was massively involved with other Netflix projects like House of Cards and Love, Death & Robots.

Mindhunter Season 2 Left Some Unanswered Questions

With Mindhunter Season 3 presumably never arriving, we are left with several questions that will probably never be answered. The biggest question is who Dennis Rader, aka the BTK Killer, is (Sonny Valicenti). Season 2 showed his recurring disturbing activities, but he was not identified or caught. Another unresolved thread is Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Debbie Mitford’s (Hannah Gross) breakup, and how it affects Ford. Similarly, Wendy (Anna Torv) and Kay’s (Lauren Glazier) relationship also ended badly in Season 2, and we are left without further exploration of her personal life.

That said, this doesn’t mean that Netflix has officially canceled Mindhunter Season 3. Earlier this year, co-CEO Ted Sarandos explained that initially they had expected a third season of the popular show. However, Fincher got involved with other projects, and ultimately it kept getting pushed back. This was a completely different explanation than what Fincher himself had previously said. Netflix put Season 3 on indefinite hold in 2020 and eventually released the cast from their contracts. The filmmaker later said that the show’s audience wasn’t large enough to justify the production expenses.

What’s Next for David Fincher After He Leaves Netflix

David Fincher had a good run with Netflix, but he is seemingly not interested in expanding the deal. That said, sources told Bloomberg that the filmmaker is not scouting another studio to team up with at the moment. He reportedly feels like he doesn’t need another large deal right now. It is important to note that this doesn’t mean he is permanently cutting ties with Netflix. He could still make his next project for the streamer.
