Brothers Episode 3 Recap: Will Woody’s Secret DNA Test Prove Matthew Is His Brother?

Brothers Episode 3 has Woody Harrelson secretly chasing the answer Matthew McConaughey may not want to hear, as a DNA test could finally settle whether their decades-long brotherhood shares actual blood.

The first two episodes gave Woody plenty of reasons to keep digging. Ma Mac admitted she had an affair with Clive, raising serious questions about Matthew’s paternity. Meanwhile, the Travis Brothers demanded $191,000 over Clive’s old debt, and Ma Mac warned Woody to leave the past alone. Naturally, Woody does the opposite. With Matthew busy launching his gubernatorial campaign, he recruits Olive for an investigation that could change everything they know about their family.

Woody’s DNA Gamble Collides With Matthew’s Campaign

Ma Mac wants the Harrelsons out of Austin, partly because their presence could attract the Travis Brothers again. Woody has the opposite agenda because he refuses to leave Texas without learning whether Clive was Matthew’s biological father. When the Travis Brothers start calling Joy, Woody convinces her to claim he has returned to California. The geriatric debt collectors swallow the ruse, although Woody now has to avoid being spotted around Austin.

Woody tells Olive about Ma Mac’s claim, and she suggests a DNA test. Since the results take weeks, Woody needs an excuse to stay with Matthew without raising suspicion. Meanwhile, Matthew’s campaign hits trouble when Lucy asks about Chapter 313 abatements, and he has no idea how to answer. Campaign manager Gwen promptly gives him an earful, so Matthew starts listening to political podcasts and studying policy while cleaning the house, which Val says he does whenever he needs to regain control. Unfortunately for Matthew, control and Woody sharing a roof rarely belong in the same sentence.

Little Woody Gives Ma Mac Ammunition Against Woody

Woody needs an excuse to extend the Harrelsons’ stay, and his solution comes with four legs. He brings home a dog called Little Woody, delighting the children while irritating the adults. His logic is audacious but effective: once Matthew’s kids adore the dog, throwing Woody and his family out becomes considerably harder. Ma Mac sees straight through the ploy and counters with some skulduggery of her own.

She produces one of Big Mac’s old football jerseys, smears peanut butter inside it, and presents the keepsake to Matthew while reminding him never to forget who his father was. Little Woody inevitably follows the smell, steals the jersey, and shreds it while searching for the treat. Matthew reaches the end of his tether and orders Woody to return the dog and take the Harrelsons back to California.

The children are miserable after Little Woody leaves, though, and Matthew soon realizes that his obsession with restoring order has spoiled something that made them happy. He accompanies Woody back to the shelter, where retrieving the dog somehow comes with a $5,000 price tag.

The trip also gives Matthew another encounter with Lucy, and this time he actually understands her Chapter 313 concerns. She is impressed that he did his homework, giving his fledgling campaign a small but necessary win. Matthew brings Little Woody home and tells Woody that his family can remain in the backyard as long as they want. Without realizing it, he has given Woody exactly what he needs: time.

Will Woody’s Secret DNA Test Prove They’re Brothers?

Episode 3 does not reveal the DNA results, and Matthew still doesn’t know that Woody and Olive have ordered the test. Woody even tells Ma Mac that he has abandoned his investigation. He admits that he and Matthew already consider themselves brothers and argues that exposing a different biological father could damage Matthew’s memories of Big Mac while throwing a spanner into his gubernatorial campaign. It sounds surprisingly mature coming from Woody, and Ma Mac buys every word.

Then she leaves, and Woody tells Olive to keep tracking the DNA report. That deception makes the eventual result a ticking time bomb regardless of what the laboratory finds. If Clive was Matthew’s father, Woody will have confirmation that the man he has called his brother for years genuinely is one. Yet Matthew must also discover that Woody investigated his paternity behind his back while he was building a political campaign partly inspired by Big Mac.

If the test comes back negative, Woody still has to explain why he risked upsetting two families to satisfy his curiosity. The fictional mystery also cheekily borrows from McConaughey and Harrelson’s real-life speculation about whether they could share a biological father, something neither actor has publicly settled through confirmed DNA results. I don’t buy the idea that Woody is secretly after Matthew’s fortune. His behavior looks far more personal and, frankly, far more Woody: someone handed him a tantalizing explanation for why his closest friend has always seemed like family, and now wild horses couldn’t stop him from finding out whether it is true.
