Jennifer Lawrence Officially Confirmed to Star in Resident Evil Director’s New Sci-Fi Thriller

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is being hailed as the best movie in the entire franchise. Amid the box office success, Cregger is gearing up for The Flood, a sci-fi thriller that has now confirmed Jennifer Lawrence as a main cast. Variety reported that the filmmaker said of her casting, “Jennifer is one of a kind, and I’m beyond excited to see her in this role.”

There are no details as of now about which character Lawrence will play in The Flood. The buzzy sci-fi thriller comes from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. Alongside directing, Cregger is also writing and producing the film. Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment and Amblin Entertainment are also involved as producers.

Jennifer Lawrence, best known for her breakout lead role in The Hunger Games franchise, seems to be a good choice for Cregger’s genre play. Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy of Warner Bros. have said, “Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today, and we are thrilled to have her at the center of Zach’s bold and wholly original vision for ‘The Flood.’” As of now, there are no other casting details.

The Flood marks Cregger’s second collaboration with Warner Bros. as a director after the box-office hit Weapons, which was released in 2025. In an interview with TheWrap earlier this month, he noted, “It’s science fiction, and it’s probably my most disturbing film. It’s not a horror movie, but it has a lot of horror in it.” This raises the bar even more, given that Cregger has delivered brutal movies like Barbarian, Weapons, and Resident Evil. Also, the director is possibly not straying far from his usual horror territory, but rather bending it with other elements.

That said, the filmmaker noted that The Flood has a bizarre narrative structure which doesn’t resemble his previous work; it asks big questions and is more interested in exploring ideas rather than delivering jump scares. Cregger also said that the film bears an influence of 2001: A Space Odyssey. However, he noted that he is not comparing his movie with Kubrick’s masterpiece.
