York Regional Police have charged a man in relation to a 2022 missing person investigation which has now been deemed a homicide.

On Aug. 30, 2022, Roman Perelstein, 45, of Richmond Hill, was reported missing by his family after having last been seen in the area of Bathurst St. and Orchard Heights Blvd. in Aurora several weeks prior.
York cops say before Perelstein was reported missing, on Aug. 21, 2022, human remains were located along a trail in the area of Sideline 20 and Concession Rd. 8 in Pickering.
Remains’ condition led to non-identification
No identification could be made at the time, due to the condition of the remains.
When he went missing, Perelstein was described as a white male with brown eyes and hair, with four missing upper teeth and a dental prosthesis, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 220 pounds, with a medium build and a light complexion.
He also had a tattoo on his right should of Dates “02.25.35 – 07.01.18” and had a surgical scar on his knee.

In March 2025, through dental records, the remains were positively identified as Perelstein and his death was deemed a homicide.
Following a lengthy investigation, Suren Khizguiiaev, 49, of Harwich, was charged on May 21, 2026, with accessory after the fact to murder and indignity to a dead body.
The investigation is ongoing.
