NEGATIVE ADS
Re Province of Ontario ads stating how they will make life more affordable by reducing taxes. There’s an old saying: When someone tells you how virtuous they are, hang onto your wallet. The ads on TV and the internet stating the province is reducing our costs may sound good, but leave out one important fact: The province is doing nothing to reduce its own costs. In true provincial and federal government fashion, they’re merely virtue-signalling while adding debt to future generations.

(It’s the spending and increased debt which are hurting all of us. Incremental tax reductions made by one level of government are increased by another.)
VICIOUS CYCLE
Re “Was Toronto cyclist takedown good policing or police going too far? (Joe Warmington, June 2): Toronto has been accommodating the cycling community through reduction of car lanes, converting them to bike lanes. This has caused a marked difference in automobile traffic trying to flow through the city, not only at peak driving times, but also during what used to be quieter periods. Once this assimilation occurred, there is no excuse for a cyclist not to respect both the traffic laws and the police enforcing them. To suggest the cyclist was not putting “the public in immediate threat” is not a demonstrable claim. The cyclist could speed through an intersection just as a car with the right of way moves forward. Accidents happen and people’s lives are ruined. However, if all vehicles respect the rules, those numbers go dramatically down. Any driver of a wheeled vehicle has the responsibility to respect the rules of the road and, a refusal to stop and flee the police speaks volumes.
