Kit Harington Officially Reveals His ‘Addictive’ Black Knight Idea That Marvel Ditched

For all the things Marvel has deprived fans of, Kit Harington‘s transformation from Dane Whitman to Black Knight hits hard. He was introduced as Whitman in Chloé Zhao’s Eternals. The movie’s post-credits scene even teased his eventual transformation. But 5 years later, he still hasn’t returned to the MCU. In a new appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Harington revealed one Black Knight idea he had that ultimately did not materialize. He said, “I think he’s a really interesting character.” The Game of Thrones alum added,

Talking of addiction and all that, I think there’s something fascinating to play with the Black Knight, and I felt this from the start: that the Ebony Blade is one that he uses and then gets bloodlust, and I think there’s an interesting story of someone going from hero to villain right there.

However, Marvel has unfortunately not picked his brain in this matter. That said, Harington remains hopeful about reprising his role someday. He said on the podcast, “So, you know, anyone from Marvel watching, but I do think it could be a fascinating story. But they’ve got so much [to work with].”

Black Knight was not the only character to be dropped from further development after Eternals, which was released during the final months of the pandemic, failed to land well at the box office. The movie, which was more star-studded than The Avengers, grossed only $402 million worldwide. With that, Marvel seemingly abandoned plans for the characters, including The Eternals themselves, Black Knight, and Harry Styles’ Starfox.

Will Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman Return to MCU

It’s safe to say that Marvel doesn’t have any current plans. Harington told Horowitz that when he had a meeting with Kevin Feige, he was told that the studio wants to find something. The actor recalled, “And then it was presented as, like, this is—you know how they do in the Marvel universe. They’ll throw a character in and then see if it goes anywhere, or see if they introduce him [somewhere]. And in the end it didn’t.”

The Eternals post-credits scene showed Dane Whitman in the middle of contemplation, after the woman he loved was taken by the Celestial Arishem. He wanted to pick up the Ebony Blade when a mysterious voice asked him whether he was ready for the power. The voice belonged to Mahershala Ali’s Blade.

There was a general assumption that Harington would return to the MCU with the planned project Blade. Mahershala Ali was supposed to take on the titular role, while fans believed Dane Whitman’s story would continue in the movie. However, Harington himself shut down the rumors. In 2023, appearing on a panel at the Superhero Comic-Con and Car Show in San Antonio, he clarified that he was “never meant to be” in Blade. But he was still hopeful about a future return at that time.
