No matter what superlatives you attach to it - a blue wave, a blue tsunami, a blue earthquake - the Democrats’ big night could look very different two years hence.

The 77 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump just two short years ago: where did they go?

Last night, as the mid-term election results rolled in, it was pretty hard to locate those 77 million Trumpkins, just about anywhere. It was like no one had voted for Trump or the Republicans two years ago, at all.
Ten years ago, of course, it was a different story. Ten years ago, almost as many American voters handed the failed real estate tycoon the keys to the White House, mainly on the strength of a dumb reality TV show. Biblical-level disaster ensued, with a mismanaged Biblical-style plague as an added bonus. Americans have learned their lesson, we thought.
Think again. Four years later — knowing what first-term Trump was like, knowing that Trump was going to keep being Trump, except worse — 77 million Americans gave him his old job back. Chaos and madness ensued.
Hire a clown, you get a circus
The definition of insanity, goes the saying, is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result. By that measure, 77 million Americans are clinically insane. I mean, what did they expect? Hire a clown twice, you get a circus, twice. Everyone knows that one, too.

Except Americans, apparently, who are this morning now celebrating the dawn of benevolent Democratic Party hegemony. The way they are now going on (and on) about democracy and the rule of law, you can forgive yourself for forgetting that many of the celebrants voted for Trump in 2016 and 2024.
But they did, they did. And that is why Canadians — and everyone else, everywhere — need to be very, very cautious about celebrating The Return of Sanity Down South. Because, while the Mango Mussolini will be long gone in a couple of years, those 77 million Americans? They’ll still be here.
Nothing in politics is permanent, in other words. No matter what superlatives you attach to it — a blue wave, a blue tsunami, a blue earthquake — the Democrats’ big night could look very different two years hence.
Besides, no red-blooded Canadian should be applauding the Americans for remembering that a racist, fascistic kleptocracy is never a good idea. They don’t deserve credit for being normal. They should’ve been normal all along, for the love of God.

Ipso facto, this writer’s personal theory isn’t that Canadians were angry at Trump alone. Yes, we regarded the Cheeto Benito as a farting, wheezing octogenarian with early-onset gay dementia. Yes, we despised him.
But after every threat to use “economic force” against us — after every 51st state epithet, every schoolyard insult, every tariff — we waited, in vain, for other Americans to ride to our rescue, like at the Alamo, but with a better result. They never came.
They — Democrats included — mostly said nothing. They did not defend us. Mike Myers volunteered to do some ads with Mark Carney, sure, but that was about it. When Donald Trump renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America,” Apple and Google and the entire U.S. government instantly fell in line, without a peep. “Lake America” it was.
We can’t trust them anymore
The point, my fellow Canadians, is this: we can’t trust them anymore. Democrats are historically much more protectionist than pre-MAGA Republicans, believe it or not. Barack Obama used to sternly lecture us about being NATO laggards, too. And, back in the mid-Sixties at Camp David, Lyndon B. Johnson once famously grabbed the genial Mike Pearson by his lapels and screamed: “You came to my living room and pissed on my rug!”

That was a Democrat who did that, folks. Not a MAGA Republican.
So, yes, it will now be a bit harder for Donald Trump to do Donald Trump things to us and the world. But he is going to keep doing them, untethered from any concern about election outcomes. If you thought he was a maniac before, wait until you experience the next couple of years. A roller-coaster ride doesn’t begin to describe it.
Because those 77 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump? They’re still there. And the gutless Democrats who mostly said and did nothing to defend us, America’s most loyal historic ally?
Well, they’re running the show now.
Buckle up, Canada. The ride ain’t over yet.
