The Running Point star stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and shared some exciting news: Her son Ryder is about to graduate from New York University. It’s not just another proud-parent update — it could actually be a first in their family history.

Surprising realization
The 47-year-old actress, who shares Ryder with ex-husband Chris Robinson, told Fallon she and her family recently had a bit of a realization.
“He’s not a kid. Ryder’s 22,” she said, as Fallon looked surprised. “He’s graduating college in two weeks. We realized, I think — and I could get this wrong and offend some generation in my family — but I think he’s the first person ever in my family history to graduate college.”
That makes the moment feel even bigger, reports People. And while Ryder has loved his time at NYU, Hudson made it clear he’s ready for what comes next, saying he’s eager to get out into the real world.
Ryder’s hidden talent
The mom of three doubled down on that excitement during an April 21 appearance on Today, where she shared she’ll be heading to New York City soon to watch him walk across the stage.

Ryder, it turns out, has more than one creative lane. While he’s interested in acting — following in his famous mom’s footsteps — he also has a surprising side passion: Furniture design. Hudson revealed the hidden talent while chatting with Today host Craig Melvin, noting that her son is currently building a sofa.
A milestone Kate clearly doesn’t take lightly
This isn’t the first time Hudson has highlighted just how meaningful the graduation is. She previously told Entertainment Tonight that Ryder could be the first in “like three generations” of their family to graduate from college, according to HELLO!
Hudson’s journey as a mom started in 2004 when she welcomed Ryder with Robinson. She later had son Bingham, now 14, with former fiancé Matt Bellamy in 2011, and daughter Rani, seven, with fiancé Danny Fujikawa in 2018, reports People.
Not ruling out more kids
During a chat on Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast, she admitted she still thinks about expanding her family, per People.
“I could have so many kids,” she said. “I even think about it right now. I’m like, ‘Am I totally done?’ Because I just can’t imagine being done.”
