Shots fired inside a Montreal bar early Saturday morning injured two young women, police say.

Around 3 a.m, emergency crews were called to a licensed establishment on St-Laurent Blvd., near Milton St, in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough, according to Montreal police spokesperson Raphaël Bergeron.

Bergeron said when officers arrived they found two women in their early 20s suffering from gunshot wounds to the lower body. Both were taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The gunman had fled before police arrived. The suspect was described as a tall man wearing dark clothing, Bergeron said.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, he added.

Investigators were expected to review surveillance footage from the area and interview witnesses. The investigation continues.
