Japan Officially Crowns the Best Light Novel of September 2026

Japan’s latest Oricon best light novel chart has produced a surprisingly close battle at the top, with a familiar franchise edging out a brand-new challenger by just a few hundred copies. My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected: Yui Vol. 3 takes No. 1 with an estimated 7,517 physical copies sold during the September 14–20 tracking period.

The result gives the Oregairu spin-off the week’s crown, but the real story is how narrowly it escaped the volume directly behind it. With 6 new entries breaking into the Top 10, Japan’s latest light novel chart also looks very different from the previous week.

Oregairu Yui Vol. 3 Takes the Top Spot With 7,517 Copies Sold

Oricon’s September 28, 2026 weekly light novel chart covers sales from September 14 to September 20. Yui Vol. 3 sold 7,517 copies in its debut week, while A Tale of the Secret Saint Vol. 13 reached 7,134. Both books were new to the previous week’s Top 10, and their combined 14,651 copies supplied a major chunk of this week’s market.

The Yui-focused release is part of Wataru Watari and Ponkan 8’s My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected, better known as Oregairu. The original series was published by Shogakukan’s Gagaga Bunko and follows cynical student Hachiman Hikigaya and the Service Club. Yui Yuigahama is one of its central characters, alongside Yukino Yukinoshita. Shogakukan lists Yui Vol. 3 among its September 2026 releases.

The week-to-week movement among returning titles puts Yui Vol. 3’s debut into further context. The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten Vol. 13 climbed from No. 5 to No. 3, with weekly sales rising from 5,044 to 6,393, a 1,349-copy jump (or 26.7%). It was the only one of the four titles appearing in both weeks’ Top 10 to increase its weekly sales.

Meanwhile, last week’s No. 1, The Irregular at Magic High School: Magian Company Vol. 12, slipped to No. 4 with 5,355 copies. Oricon reports its weekly sales fell 67.4%.

Top 10 Light Novels That Dominated Japan’s September 2026 Chart

The Top 10 sold 44,624 copies altogether, down 13.9% from the previous week’s 51,830. The first three titles, including My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected: Yui Vol. 3, A Tale of the Secret Saint Vol. 13, and The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten Vol. 13, contributed 21,044 copies, or 47.2% of the total. Plus, six books were new to the previous week’s Top 10, while only four carried over.

KADOKAWA also had a notable footprint, placing five volumes in the Top 10 for 16,520 copies, or 37% of the total. Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter appeared twice at Nos. 8 and 9, together selling 5,478 copies. At the opposite end, A Certain Magical Index Vol. 16 fell from No. 2 to No. 10 with 2,274 copies, down 66.5%.

The contrast between new arrivals and returning titles gives this chart its real narrative tension. The opening week is especially fun to watch. For a chart this crowded, the headline is clear: Yui Vol. 3 took No. 1, but by a margin small enough to make Japan’s latest light novel race feel like a final-scene cliffhanger.
