27 Years Later, The Blair Witch Project Creators Officially Return With New Found Footage Movie

In 1999, The Blair Witch Project scared audiences so well that many believed its missing student filmmakers were real. Now, 27 years later, two of the people responsible for that chilling experience are heading back into found-footage territory.

Eduardo Sánchez, who co-created Blair Witch, and producer Gregg Hale have teamed up for The Influencer Project, a new horror film that swaps the dark Maryland woods for the world of social media fame. This time, Sánchez and Hale serve as producers, while Danish filmmaker Mike Nybroe makes his feature directing debut.

Nybroe also co-wrote the script with Lars Ap and Anders Jon Petersen. Alex Hertzberg and Ahmet Zappa of Hades Films round out the producing team. At the center of it all is Chiara King, a British beauty and lifestyle influencer with over 4.2 million TikTok followers. The Influencer Project marks her first-ever acting role.

What Is Chiara King’s The Influencer Project About?

In The Influencer Project, Chiara King plays a version of herself. She travels to Copenhagen with a documentary crew that promises to show the unfiltered side of life as an online star. Her fans follow her every move, just like the cameras do. But soon it becomes clear that someone else is watching too.

A dangerous stalker starts closing in, and the documentary turns into something much darker. Before long, the line between content and evidence, and between a fan and a predator, starts to disappear. What makes the film even more unsettling is that it is inspired by King’s real-life experiences with stalkers.

She has said she hopes the film leaves viewers feeling empowered rather than scared, sharing with IndieWire, “I wanted to tell a story about standing in your power, taking my control back, facing that terror head-on, and speaking my voice in a way that breaks the mold of the victim.”

The trailer leans hard into that fear. Shot in a raw, found-footage style, it shows King going about her glamorous life as an influencer, only for a masked man to start creeping into her life. It becomes clear that he is obsessed with her online persona, and her carefully curated world begins to crack.

The trailer shines a light on the very real dangers of stalking and harassment that come with living life online. The Influencer Project opens in theaters internationally on October 2, followed by a UK and Ireland release on October 16.

The Blair Witch Creators Explain the Connection Between the Two Movies

For Eduardo Sánchez and Gregg Hale, the choice to back The Influencer Project came down to one thing. The project felt real. In a statement to IndieWire, the duo said Chiara King’s performance was what first pulled them in. They described it as “raw and powerful,” adding that it “felt very much like reality.”

That feeling of not knowing what is real is exactly what made Blair Witch a phenomenon back in 1999. The pair explained that King’s work reminded them of their own cult classic. They said:

The link between the two films goes beyond style. Mike Nybroe originally shot a pilot about an influencer who arrives in Copenhagen and catches the eye of a creepy stranger. When he met with Hades Films, he learned the company had ties to the Blair Witch team.

Nybroe recalled that the room went silent when this came up. He was then asked if he would like to make the film alongside Sánchez and Hale. Looking back, Nybroe admitted he still finds it hard to believe it all came together.
