Henry Cavill is finally bringing his dream project, Warhammer 40K, to life, and Mike Flanagan recently joined as a director. However, adapting the tabletop game is not for the faint-hearted. The Carrie filmmaker recently admitted that the Amazon project was the toughest battle for him so far (via The Process Unlocked).
That, to me, was…That is really a brutally difficult adaptation.
Flanagan has adapted multiple Stephen King novels, as well as The Haunting of Hill House and The Turn of the Screw, all classics in the horror genre. For someone who is so adept at this, openly admitting that it is a massive challenge to adapt Warhammer 40K, whose lore could easily rival Star Wars, is a strong statement and makes sense why it is taking so long.
Mike Flanagan Admitted Cavill’s Dream Project Is a Monster to Adapt

He has actually been quite overt about his passion for gaming, which even got him into The Witcher series and made him committed to telling the story faithfully. Of course, the Netflix series came with its own set of drama and behind-the-scenes complexities with the DCEU.
However, Warhammer 40K has been Cavill’s dream project for a long time, and fans were ecstatic when they got to know that he is developing the miniature game into an Amazon Prime Video project. Mike Flanagan, who recently made Carrie for the streamer and has made several horror projects for Netflix, joined as director earlier this year.
Flanagan recently admitted that the Games Workshop game was his toughest gig so far. Talking about the vast lore that is already present in the franchise, he expressed difficulty in navigating it to tell the right story and how it compared to his other adaptation gigs.
The Dark Tower when I picked up was seven novels. It became eight…Warhammer, 700 novels…these are novel length. Like, these are not small…there are so many characters. It takes place over so many thousands of years. Like, there’s so much there. The challenge is: how do you get in?
The studio has still not announced whether the first entry into the franchise will be a film or a series, which already speaks to how difficult of an adaptation it is. Still, Flanagan seems to be up for the task, and Henry Cavill has never given up on his dream projects.
Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40K Could Succeed Where Star Wars Failed
A still from No Peace Amongst the Stars | Credits: YouTube/WarhammerWhen you think of sci-fi, Warhammer 40K does not immediately spring to mind. Star Wars, Star Trek, and more recently, Dune, are more definitive works in the genre. However, the lore that Warhammer 40K has easily trumps the best of the best in the genre. The war game is set in the distant future, in a civilization that has a mix of humans, hostile aliens, and supernatural creatures.
The setting has been built out over decades. It spans animations, role-playing and video games, comics, and the extensive Black Library publications, which gives fans a steady stream of characters to explore. Flanagan himself puts the novel count at roughly 700, against eight books in Stephen King’s Dark Tower saga.
Compared to Star Wars, whose canon is still sort of confusing, thanks to Lucasfilm’s sale to Disney, Warhammer 40K is rock solid. There is just a huge amount of it that is making it difficult to adapt. Be it a series or a set of movies, a proper adaptation with all the resources necessary to bring it to life would take the franchise to the next level.
