It has recently been reported that HBO’s Harry Potter reboot, which is an adaptation of the J.K. Rowling novels, is going to cost more than Daniel Radcliffe’s costliest movie of all time. According to a report by The Times, the production cost of Season One of the Harry Potter series has reached £147.4 million (~$196.4 million), and they had just reached halfway through the shoot.
Based on UK laws, HBO’s production company, called Plum Jam Productions, spent £129 million (~$171.9 million) when filming began back in July 2025. In comparison, the costliest Daniel Radcliffe movies to be made, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, came at around $250 million (~£187.6 million) each. On the other hand, the filming of the first season of the HBO reboot went on till May this year, which means the series has likely crossed the $250 million mark in terms of production cost.
Much of the budget went towards the visual effects of the first season since animating Hogwarts (with all the feasts for first-year students) doesn’t exactly come cheap. In fact, the visual effects studio that worked on the original Harry Potter movies is also working on the HBO reboot.
The Original CGI Studio Returned For the Harry Potter Series

The studio was also responsible for the visual effects done in the original Harry Potter movies, which led to an increase in budget for visually intensive scenes.
Although the movies found worldwide fame and acclaim (earning a combined collection of $7.9 billion or £5.9 billion), the same cannot be a guarantee for the upcoming HBO reboot.
The show is going towards authenticity while filming in real locations. A complaint from a Buckinghamshire village was reported because the production team had blocked the local roads in order to give them a 1990s makeover for the series. Naturally, Warner Bros. is going all out for the Harry Potter series.
Warner Bros. Is Betting It All On The Success of The Reboot Series

In fact, the studio is already working on a wider expansion to boost capacity by 50% by 2027, even before rival studio Paramount acquired the company.
The space at Leavesden (Warner Bros. studio) demands an increase in space just so that people can work on this project. Not to mention, six further series are already planned over the course of the next decade, and filming for Season Two of Harry Potter is also under way.
Naturally, much of the series’ future plans depend on the success of the first season and how people perceive this new reboot. Nothing can be confirmed or denied until Christmas this year, when the first episode of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres.
