Horror comedy movies have found their own audiences that enjoy seeing Ghostface run down a flight of stairs with a piano chasing behind (Scary Movie, anyone?). Throughout the years, horror comedy movies have evolved from being cult hits to incorporating dark humor and slapstick comedy, much to the amusement of fans.
From Adam Sandler’s Hubie Halloween to movies that weren’t supposed to be this funny, here are 10 horror comedy movies that are simply flawless from start to finish, ranked.
10 James Gunn Joins This List With Slither
A still from James Gunn’s Slither | Credits: Brightlight PicturesEverything that James Gunn wasn’t able to do exactly in his 2002 film, Scooby-Doo, the director got to do with this 2006 horror comedy flick, Slither. Starring Elizabeth Banks and Nathan Fillion in leading roles, Gunn pairs body horror with a small-town cast that treats alien slug parasites like a minor inconvenience.
The film works as a gleeful B-movie with real personality; however, the film is the messiest in tone and pacing on this list, making it the 10th best horror comedy out there.
Slither is available to rent on Prime Video.
9 The Cabin in the Woods Was THE Meta Movie of the 2010s
A still from The Cabin in the Woods | Credits: Metro-Goldwyn-MayerAn ensemble cast starring Chris Hemsworth, The Cabin in the Woods is THE meta movie of the 2010s. The humor in the movie comes from watching bored technicians run a horror apocalypse like an office job (betting pools and all).
Although the concept for the movie was quite brilliant (with the final act being pure mayhem), the first half of the horror comedy is more setup than payoff, which makes it the 9th best in this list.
The Cabin in the Woods is available to stream on AMC.
8 Scary Movie Was Not That Scary
A still from Scary Movie | Credits: Dimension FilmsThis is a little unfair because Scary Movie is a parody film of horror movies and was bound to be funnier than horror. Featuring late-90s slashers, with gross-out gags, pop-culture spoofs, and Anna Faris and the Wayans cast committing fully to the silliness, Scary Movie is easily one of the most rewatchable horror comedies of all time.
However, the film’s commitment to comedy made it not that scary. It’s an easy rewatch, but a weaker genre fit than the films above (and below) it, making Scary Movie the 8th best horror comedy flick on this list.
Scary Movie is available to stream on Kanopy.
7 Gremlins Turned a Creature Feature Into Comedy
A still from Gremlins | Credits: Warner Bros.Gremlins is a 1984 horror comedy that follows Billy Peltzer, who receives Gizmo (a gremlin) as a pet, who then spawns more of his kind that evolve into the titular monsters that wreak havoc on Billy’s hometown during Christmas Eve.
Joe Dante (the director) stages the cartoonish chaos, and the funny elements of this movie include gremlins crashing a bar, singing along to Snow White, and tormenting Mrs. Deagle. The mean-spirited slapstick is the point; however, there are instances where the film might surprise you with a jump scare or two.
Gremlins is available to stream on HBO Max.
6 We Weren’t Ready For Ready or Not
Samara Weaving in a still from Ready or Not | Credits: Searchlight PicturesReady or Not shocked the world when it was released back in 2019. Some after-wedding activities quickly turn into a desperate fight for survival for the bride (Samara Weaving), with the groom’s family hunting her.
This one is a little more controversial pick (we know) because the comedy is dark and escalating. With wealthy in-laws fumbling their way through a deadly ritual and with antique weapons they can’t use, the film is a metaphorical joke dressed in a nightmare.
The only reason the film is #6 on this list is that it leans just a little less than the top five.
Ready or Not is available to stream on Netflix.
5 Tucker & Dale vs. Evil Flipped The Table
A still from Tucker & Dae vs. Evil | Credits: Eden Rock MediaTucker & Dale vs. Evil finally gives the audience a chance to look at horror from the eyes of an antagonist. Although the two leads didn’t want to be the antagonists for a bunch of college kids, the mistaken identity is why the movie is outright hilarious.
Two harmless hillbillies keep getting mistaken for killers while the college kids accidentally die in absurd ways. Naturally, the plot escalates (and so do the misunderstandings). Although the film commits fully to a single idea, the drawback is that it commits to a single idea throughout its entire runtime.
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is available to stream on Peacock.
4 Adam Sandler’s Hubie Halloween Was Near Perfect
Adam Sandler in a still from Hubie Halloween | Credits: Happy Madison ProductionsAdam Sandler’s role as a perpetually harassed town who is a do-gooder in a goofy Halloween caper makes up for plenty of silly, warm-hearted gags. Not to indulge my sense of humor, but the thermos jokes alone are worth it.
Although a controversial pick, the case for Hubie Halloween‘s #4 ranking starts with the fact that the movie has monsters, jump scares, a whodunit, and a Halloween feel that’s more atmospheric than half the genre’s budget titles. The comedy is kept dumb on purpose, and although critics hated it, audiences loved it. Exactly how cult horror movies are perceived.
Adam Sandler is available to stream on Netflix.
3 Zombieland Was a Wild Take on the Zombie Genre
Jessie Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson in Zombieland | Credits: Columbia PicturesWe are in the top 3 now. However, this is where the list becomes a little unfair. Zombies (or infected or people dead but alive) make up for some of the most comedic characters out there, and Zombieland proved that back in 2009.
Being a highly quotable movie with tons of rules-based survival gags, Woody Harrelson’s Twinkie obsession, and the legendary Bill Murray cameo made Zombieland one of the funniest horror comedy movies of all time.
Although the horror is a bit less, the fun premise and an iconic cast make it the 3rd best horror comedy on this list.
Zombieland is available to stream on HBO Max.
2 Evil Dead II Wasn’t Supposed To Be That Funny
A still from Evil Dead II | Credits: Renaissance PicturesDirected by iconic director Sam Raimi, Evil Dead II turned out to be much funnier than intended. Released in 1987, the horror film was turned into a slapstick comedy by Sam Raimi. Ash’s possessed hand, the laughing furniture, and the blood geysers play as gags, while Bruce Campbell’s exaggerated reactions sell every beat.
Although it’s relentless, wildly inventive, and arguably the defining slapstick-splatter film, the #1 movie’s tighter construction made Evil Dead II number two on this list.
Evil Dead II is available to stream on HBO Max.
1 Shaun of the Dead Is the Definition of Horror Comedy
A still from Shaun of the Dead | Credits: Working Title FilmsEdgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead, starring Simon Pegg, builds jokes as setups for later payoffs. From the “casual walk” past zombies to the Winchester showdown with a jukebox soundtrack is pure comedy.
The banter is kept sharp throughout, and the friendship between Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright gives the laughs real emotional weight. The film manages to balance scare, comedy, and heart better than any other film in this list. Naturally, Shaun of the Dead is the best horror comedy movie in this list.
Shaun of the Dead is available to stream on Peacock.
