After a series of disappointing outings in the superhero genre, 2026 appears to have turned things around. In just the first few months, the genre has delivered several standout shows. Most recently, the first two episodes of The Boys Season 5, the fifth and final installment of the series, rolled out on Prime Video on Wednesday, April 8.
The series opened to strong reviews after the embargo was lifted on Monday. As of writing on April 9, 2026, The Boys Season 5 holds a 97% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 39 reviews. Its release comes at a time when Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again is also delivering peak-level content with its Season 2 episodes.
Meanwhile, Invincible has rolled out its sixth episode of Season 4 (as of April 9, 2026), with critics calling it one of the show’s best seasons yet. Earlier this year, fans were also treated to a radically different Marvel series in Wonder Man, which drew widespread praise from both audiences and critics.
Here’s a ranked list of how these shows stack up, and where the recently debuted The Boys Season 5 stands among them. The entries are ranked according to the editorial preference and perspective.
4 Wonder Man
Wonder Man follows the story of Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who tries to balance his roles between an actor and a superhero. The show nailed the chemistry between Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s central protagonist and Ben Kingsley’s returning character, Trevor Slattery.
The series is a brilliant meta show that took a detour from the MCU’s formulaic superhero projects. It serves as a love letter to all actors. The character-driven nature of the show was a refreshing change from earlier MCU shows that depended on spectacle storytelling and unnecessary cameos.
Abdul-Mateen II’s character is a surprising twist from the comics version. You can watch this interesting show, which turns superhero tropes on their head, on Disney+.
3 Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
Daredevil: Born Again returns for its sophomore season on Disney+, and it is not holding anything back. Right from the first season, the Disney version promised that fans would be getting the full Netflix-era experience. Born Again is a far cry from Marvel’s flashy spectacle, anchoring its storytelling on a brooding, morally tangled war between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk.
Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio can never fail you with their roles in the series. FandomWire‘s M.N. Miller called their performances “award-worthy”, sharing that the show has set “a new standard for streaming MCU television.”
Four episodes in, and we have already seen some masterful villain moves from Kingpin. He has managed to reframe Daredevil as the city’s villain. The show also has other intriguing plots going for it, with Vanessa Fisk & Bullseye and Heather Glenn’s unraveling psyche. Season 2 genuinely earns its darkness, and we are all here for it.
2 The Boys Season 5
The first two episodes of the final season strongly support the critical review that Erik Kripke nailed the finale. The fight against Homelander has entered its final stage, and the season promises not to hold back on its violent chaos and brutality.
One of the biggest criticisms of the fourth season was that the creators seemed to be running out of ways to raise the stakes. Fans were becoming too familiar with the show’s signature blood and gore. Many felt it was time for the series to bow out while still at its peak. It appears that The Boys is taking all this criticism into account for this fifth & final season.
The story of this season revolves around both sides’ attempts to get their hands on the last surviving sample of the original Compound V formula: the MacGuffin: V1. The first two episodes have already laid out the high stakes for the finale season. We are all excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us. All episodes are now available for streaming on Prime Video.
1 Invincible Season 4
Even with all the brilliant live-action shows on this list, Prime Video’s bloodiest animated epic takes the top position as the best superhero show of 2026 so far. We are six episodes into the fourth season of Invincible, and the stakes are reaching an all-time high.
In the new season, the characters are dealing with the aftermath of Angstrom Levy and Conquest, with Mark being publicly blamed for the destruction. The narrative shifts to Nolan’s past and offers a perspective into the Viltrumite society, something that was absent in the comics.
Steven Yeun and J.K. Simmons are brilliant as usual in their roles as Mark and Nolan. Lee Pace voices the main antagonist, Grand Regent Thragg. Season 4 is one of the show’s strongest runs yet, with bloodier action than ever. However, this time, the violence is more like a warning sign about Mark’s mental state. You can watch all 6 episodes of the season on Prime Video.
Here’s a quick summary of all the shows mentioned in this list:
