6 Decepticons Who Were Far Better Leaders Than Optimus Prime

Optimus Prime is the moral centre of Transformers. He is the one who delivers the noble speech and refuses to cross the line even when crossing it would win the war. Four decades of cartoons, comics, and films have built him into the definitive good guy in charge, and that reputation is earned after fighting off all the Decepticons.

But being a good person and being a good commander are two different jobs. Leadership is about decisions, resources, and whether your people still follow you when things go badly. Judged on that, Optimus has a patchy record.

And across the wider franchise, the Decepticons have produced a surprising number of commanders who simply did the job better than he did. The best Decepticon leadership stories are scattered across the movies, comics, and cartoons in the franchise. We believe these six ran their side better than Optimus did.

1 Megatronus Prime Is the Only Leader Megatron Ever Knelt To

Before the Decepticons had a name, they had Megatronus Prime. Megatronus was one of the original Primes, Optimus Prime’s equal by rank, until he broke the single rule his brothers held sacred and tried to harvest a living world for energy. They sealed him away, and he became the Fallen.

He is the first Decepticon, and the founder of the faction every other name on this list would eventually serve. The real proof of his authority is Megatron‘s actions in Revenge of the Fallen. A character who betrays everyone kneels to this one and calls him master without hesitation. Optimus has never commanded that from anybody.

2 D-16 Made the Harder Calls Long Before He Took the Name Megatron

Transformers One spends most of its runtime showing D-16 and Orion Pax reaching the same conclusions by different routes, and D-16 usually gets there first. When the pair stumble onto the High Guard, a band of exiled soldiers led by Starscream, D-16 does not negotiate. He fights and beats Starscream, and takes command of the unit.

While Orion improvises, breaks rules, and repeatedly needs saving, D-16 reads the room and earns the loyalty. The film treats that hardness as the beginning of his corruption, and it is. But as a commander, he was the disciplined one long before he ever took his idol’s name for himself.

3 Ratbat Ran the Decepticons Like a Business Leader

Ratbat began as a fuel auditor on Cybertron, counting energy stockpiles for someone else. In Marvel’s run, that tiny cassette, who turns into a bat-shaped machine, ends up commanding the Earth-based Decepticons. He runs them like a company bleeding money. He had no ego, and conquests didn’t interest him.

He runs operations that bring back more than they cost. His most revealing move is recalling Trypticon, a city-sized war machine, all the way from Earth because it had blown through its energy allowance. No Decepticon leader before him had bothered to ask what the war was actually costing them. Ratbat did the maths and delivered results Megatron never managed.

4 Shockwave Held Cybertron for Four Million Years

Megatron left Shockwave in charge of Cybertron and expected to be back shortly. He was gone for four million years. Shockwave held the planet for that entire stretch without a coup, a collapse, or a crisis. His run makes it the most stable command anyone on either side has ever managed. The Marvel comics take it further.

Shockwave ambushes the Autobots when they are exhausted from an earlier fight and wipes the floor with them. He then uses that victory to take the Decepticons off Megatron entirely, demoting his own leader to second-in-command.

5 Sentinel Prime Outplayed Optimus and Megatron in the Same Afternoon

In Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Optimus flew to the moon to rescue his old mentor and carried the enemy home himself. However, Sentinel Prime had decided years earlier that the Autobots were going to lose, and had cut a private deal with Megatron to rebuild Cybertron using Earth’s resources.

He kills Ironhide, takes the pillars, and opens the space bridge. Then he does the thing nobody sees coming. He tells Megatron that he is not his commander and takes charge of the Decepticons. In a single afternoon, he beat Optimus in combat, got the Autobots exiled from Earth, and demoted Megatron inside his own army.

6 Beast Wars Megatron Came Closer to Winning Than Anyone in the Franchise

Beast Wars Megatron is a Predacon, a successor of the Decepticons, from long after the Great War who took the name out of pure admiration for Megatron. What he did with it is the single most effective run of command in Transformers history.

In Beast Wars: Transformers, he stole the Golden Disk and found the coordinates the original Megatron had hidden inside it. He then travelled back through time and located the Ark. Then he shot the stasis-locked Optimus Prime in the head. For one genuine moment, the timeline shifted, and the Decepticons had won the entire war.
