John Wick Star’s 10/10 Stop-Motion Masterpiece With Dakota Fanning Pulverizes Streaming Charts

Seventeen years after button eyes first terrified a generation, Coraline is mauling the streaming competition. Henry Selick’s stop-motion dark fantasy joined Hulu on September 1, 2026, and by September 13 it was still the No. 1 movie on Hulu in the United States, marking its eighth consecutive day atop the movie chart. It also ranked No. 6 across all Hulu programming that day (via FlixPatrol).

The cast gives the headline another fun wrinkle. Dakota Fanning voices Coraline Jones, while Ian McShane plays the eccentric Mr. Bobinsky. McShane later became a pillar of the John Wick franchise as Winston, the formidable manager of New York’s Continental Hotel. And ‘10/10 masterpiece’ is not empty embroidery. Letterboxd users continue handing Coraline perfect scores: one 2026 review gave it a straight 10/10, while another called the stop-motion imagery haunting, the voice work superb, and rated the film 10/10 overall. Rotten Tomatoes offers broader critical ballast with a 91% Tomatometer.

Coraline Earned Its 10/10 Reputation the Hard Way

Adapted from Neil Gaiman’s novel, Coraline follows an 11-year-old who discovers a passage into an apparently improved version of her life. The food is better, her “Other Parents” are attentive, and everything looks tailor-made for her. Then the buttons come out. Fanning leads a voice cast that includes Teri Hatcher, Keith David, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, John Hodgman, Robert Bailey Jr., and McShane (via Focus Features).

What keeps the film from gathering dust is the tactile menace of its animation. Selick shot Coraline using physical stop-motion puppets while incorporating stereoscopic 3D, and he resisted treating the format as a carnival trick. Discussing stop-motion, he put its appeal neatly (Metro SV): 

Fanning understood why the film’s sweetness needed that sinister undercurrent. She said (via Voice of America) the story takes things that appear “perfect and innocent and wonderful” and turns them upside down, which is exactly what the Other World does as its candy coating starts to rot. Letterboxd’s fandom backs up that longevity. The platform currently counts more than 200,000 fans for Coraline, and its popular reviews repeatedly single out the painstaking frame-by-frame artistry. 

Coraline Keeps Finding New Ways to Come Back

This is hardly the first time Coraline has clawed its way back into popular culture. Its original 2009 theatrical run earned roughly $126.8 million worldwide against a reported $60 million budget. Including subsequent rereleases, Box Office Mojo now puts its cumulative worldwide haul above $188 million. The appetite became impossible to dismiss during its 15th-anniversary theatrical return in 2024. LAIKA reported that the remastered 3D rerelease had already made $38.3 million globally within its opening stretch (via Business Wire), while also surpassing E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’s rerelease performance in the UK. 

Now Hulu is providing the next encore. A movie released when Barack Obama had barely entered the White House has spent more than a week beating far newer titles on Hulu’s movie chart. That is not nostalgia limping along on fumes; it is a remarkably durable piece of animation finding another generation willing to crawl through the little door. For McShane, Winston may be the role action fans recognize instantly. For animation devotees, though, the booming Russian acrobat upstairs remains part of a film that refuses to stay buried.
