Harry Potter Star Officially Changes Lucius Malfoy’s Backstory in HBO Reboot

Johnny Flynn is building Lucius Malfoy around a childhood that the Harry Potter books and movies never established. The actor, who takes over the role from Jason Isaacs in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, has revealed that he is approaching Lucius as someone who was bullied at school before growing into a bully himself. He told Radio Times, explaining that he wants to play Lucius as somebody repeating the abusive behavior once directed at him:

That officially changes the backstory Flynn is using for his performance, although HBO has not yet confirmed that Lucius being bullied will be stated onscreen or treated as new series canon. This is crucial because established Wizarding World material paints Lucius from a very different starting point: immense inherited wealth, political access, pure-blood superiority, and a family tradition of courting power. HBO’s adaptation may therefore be adding psychological shading where the source material largely supplied privilege and ideology.

Johnny Flynn’s reasoning is rooted less in excusing Lucius than in trying to locate the machinery behind his cruelty. He said he knows people who became abusers after having once been abused themselves, adding that “nobody’s outright good or bad in the world.” For an actor, that supplies Lucius with an internal history to play even if the scripts never spell it out.

That is a noticeable departure from the emphasis of the existing lore. The official Harry Potter encyclopedia describes the Malfoys as one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight, obsessed with wealth, influence, and wizarding superiority. Lucius’ father, Abraxas Malfoy, was himself an influential figure accused of helping force a Muggle-born Minister for Magic from office. Lucius later became one of Voldemort’s Death Eaters and used his Ministry connections to protect his interests. 

Nothing in that official history gives Lucius a bullied-at-school origin. Instead, it repeatedly stresses a family culture built around status, entitlement, and proximity to power. That does not technically make Flynn’s interpretation impossible (Lucius’ school years remain comparatively underexplored) but it reframes the source material’s aristocratic bully as someone who may also see himself as a product of mistreatment. 

HBO’s Harry Potter Is Already Expanding the Malfoys

Johnny Flynn’s reinterpretation also arrives while HBO is giving the Malfoy family considerably more room than Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone originally did. Lucius does not properly enter J.K. Rowling’s novels until Chamber of Secrets, yet Flynn is appearing in Season 1. Lox Pratt, who plays Draco, has separately teased scenes showing characters outside Harry’s point of view, including material involving Draco at home (via ComicBook).

That gives the reboot room to establish Lucius before Harry ever encounters him in the original chronology. HBO and Wizarding World have described the series as a more expansive, book-faithful adaptation with greater depth and detail, while Pratt has confirmed that it will also leave Harry’s immediate perspective to show characters such as Draco at home. The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is due on HBO and HBO Max at Christmas 2026. 

Jason Isaacs, meanwhile, appears perfectly content to let Flynn tear up his blueprint. Isaacs has said (via EW) Flynn will “do his own thing” and even floated the possibility that his successor could make Lucius “more charming.” He also expects the visual identity to change, noting that the famous long blond hair, cane, and capes were choices he helped develop for the movies. 

Flynn has created a new personal backstory for the way he intends to play Lucius. If the show puts that history on screen, however, one of Harry Potter’s most unapologetically privileged villains could acquire a very different scar beneath the silver-blond hair. What do you think?
