3 Years Later, Russell Crowe Officially Confirms Real-Life Horror Sequel Isn’t Dead Yet

Horror fans, wake up. Russell Crowe has confirmed that he is still interested in the sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist. The horror movie, based on real-life case files, was released in 2023 and went on to earn $77 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo) on a modest $18 million budget. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Crowe said, “There are certain characters where I’ve been approached about a sequel, like Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist.” While he didn’t provide much concrete information about the development, the Oscar-winning actor said,

They want to do another one of those, and that’s such a rich character who wrote 12 books about his experiences, and we’ve only just scratched the surface. So that would be interesting to do.

Whether or not the creative forces behind the movie will reunite to actually make the sequel is not confirmed yet. But, it’s relieving for fans to know that Crowe is at least interested in making The Pope’s Exorcist 2.

Why Is The Pope’s Exorcist 2 Delayed

In 2024, a year after the first movie was released, producer Jeff Katz took to X to officially announce that a sequel was greenlit. “Amorth Nation — I just got the call. It’s officially happening!” Katz wrote. Crowe himself said in an interview with The Six O’Clock Show that originally a trilogy had been planned at Screen Gems. He noted that there could be a third movie based on how the sequel performs, noting, “Gabriele Amorth, he wrote twelve books. So we have more than enough source material to do one or two more of those films.”

However, he also noted that the follow-ups were not moved into production as quickly as expected due to changes in studio leadership, causing the project to “go around in a few circles.” After two years of an unclear status on the sequel, fans finally know that it isn’t dead, at least.

Everything We Know So Far About Russell Crowe’s The Pope’s Exorcist Sequel

There is no official confirmation about when The Pope’s Exorcist 2 might begin production. That said, the sequel could continue Amorth investigating more demonic activity around the world. The first movie ended with him being told about 199 other sites connected to demonic activity. That gives the sequel a clear direction: Father Gabriele Amorth and Father Esquibel could again team up for their investigation. Crowe also discussed that Amorth’s 12 books provide plenty of material for additional movies, so The Pope’s Exorcist 2 could pick up an entirely different real-life case, abandoning the Asmodeus storyline shown in the first movie.

Russel Crowe will likely return as Amorth if the sequel is to take place. Daniel Zovatto could also return as Father Esquibel if the first movie’s storyline continues. However, there is no official cast confirmation yet.
