2 Years Later, Guy Ritchie’s $60M Thriller With Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson Explodes on Netflix

Henry Cavill might never get to be James Bond, but he got to be someone close in Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. The WWII action-adventure romp sees Cavill play a real-life character, Gus March-Philips, who was reportedly the inspiration for James Bond. The film also features Reacher star Alan Ritchson.

While the film was released back in 2024, it is currently seeing a resurgence in streaming. According to FlixPatrol, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is the most-streamed movie on Netflix in the USA as of September 21, 2026. The film has been steadily gaining spots in the past few weeks, especially after the release of Ritchie’s The Gentlemen season 2.

Guy Ritchie seems to be having the most productive decade so far, as the filmmaker has released 6 movies since 2021, all of which he has directed, and has atleast two more in the pipeline. He has also worked on multiple TV shows as a producer, with Netflix’s The Gentlemen, based on the 2019 movie of the same name, becoming quite successful.

Speaking of Ritchie’s success on Netflix, his 2024 movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has gained the top spot on the streamer’s most-watched movies of the week. For the past few weeks, the film has been steadily gaining positions, with the last week seeing a meteoric rise to the top 5. Today, it finally reached number 1.

The film is partly based on a true story, following the establishment of Winston Churchill’s WWII squad, the Special Operations Executive, and Operation Postmaster. While these agencies and operations are real, many of the sequences are stylized and fictionalized, making it more of a popcorn flick rather than a true representation of the times.

Henry Cavill reunited with Guy Ritchie after The Man from U.N.C.L.E. for the movie and even joined hands with Alan Ritchson. The action duo made a great pair on screen, though the film was not a big earner at the box office. Still, the film seems to have found a new lease of life on streaming.

Part of the reason why the film has reached the top spot could just be timing. Ritchie’s The Gentleman released its second season earlier this month and has become quite popular. With fans clamoring for more of Ritchie’s style, it was the perfect time for the film to find its streaming home.

Guy Ritchie and Henry Cavill may be a dream team, but they have technically never delivered a commercial hit. They have worked on three films together, including this year’s In the Grey, and the Man of Steel star has been paired with a different star each time. However, none of them have made big money at the box office.

Despite its streaming success, first on Amazon Prime Video and now on Netflix, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was a box office bomb. Made on a budget of $60 million, the film only earned $26.9 million at the global box office (via The Numbers). This was despite having Cavill and Reacher star Alan Ritchson in the lead.

Ritchie and Cavill collaborations have been money losers. Their first movie together, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., was a popular adaptation of the TV show, but earned only $110 million against an $84 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). Their recent film, In the Grey, also earned only $27 million against a $70 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). It also had Jake Gyllenhaal in the cast.

There is no clear reason as to why their collaborations have not worked at the box office. Henry Cavill has also been a curse at the Box Office, with his film Argylle also not working well. Still, the former Superman has enough fans to keep things going, and everyone is excited for his upcoming Highlander film and the Warhammer 40K series.
