Woman killed in Burlington hit-and-run collision; suspect wanted in Niagara-area break-and-enter cases

Welland man also taken into custody and charged with nine sexual offences

Halton Regional Police says it is investigating a fatal hit-and-run collision involving a female pedestrian in Burlington on Thursday.

Police said, at approximately 3:45 p.m., officers were called to the area of Maple Ave. and Richmond Rd. for a collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian.

A woman was struck by a vehicle, cops said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the incident, police said the suspected vehicle in question left the scene. The car was last seen travelling northbound on Maple.

The vehicle is described as a dark coloured sedan. Police say there could be damage to the front of the car.

Suspect wanted in Niagara-area break-and-enter cases

Niagara Regional Police say the hunt is on for the person responsible for two break-and-enter cases earlier this month.

Police said, officers were called Aug. 11 to a report of a break-and-enter at a storage facility in Welland.

Upon further investigation, cops said officers determined the incident occurred the day before, between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

The investigation was taken over by detectives with the 3 District Street Crime Unit, and they were able to obtain security footage of a suspect vehicle involved, as well as a trailer that was stolen, police said. 

The second incident occurred Aug. 17 at approximately 12:30 a.m., following a report of a theft at a construction site in Port Colborne.

Police said officers attended the scene and learned that the theft occurred on Aug. 10 at approximately 12:30 a.m.

Detectives learned that the vehicle involved in the Port Colborne theft was the same one as the Welland incident.

Investigators are now turning to the public to help identify the suspect vehicle in these incidents, cops said.

Sexual assault arrest in Welland

A Welland man has been taken into custody and charged with nine sexual offences.

Niagara Regional Police said uniformed officers were called to a Welland address on Aug. 21 for a report of a sexual assault.

Officers learned that three children under the age of 10 were allegedly assaulted by a non-familial male known to the family, police said. The Child Abuse Unit (CAU) then took over the investigation.

On Aug. 26, Anthony Stephen Michael, 56, was arrested and charged with nine offences including three counts of child sexual abuse exploitation, voyeurism, two counts of sexual assault, sexual interference with a person under 16, assault with a weapon, and failure to comply with a probation order.

Police said the accused remains in custody and was scheduled to attend a bail hearing on Thursday in St. Catharines.

Detectives are asking for anyone with information related to this incident, or for anyone who believes that may be a victim/survivor of this accused to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service’s Child Abuse Unit at 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009898.
