A display of raw, awe-inspiring power by our handsome wizard, Qifrey, proving he isn’t just a gentle mentor. He is a force of nature.

For four episodes, Qifrey has been the calm, collected teacher living in a secluded cottage, far from the stuffy politics of the wizarding headquarters. We knew he was talented, but Episode 5 gave us the “receipts.” When a rescue mission for Coco, Agott, Tetia, and Richeh (his apprentices) turns deadly, Qifrey makes an entrance that will likely be remembered as the highlight of the season.

The tension peaks when Agott, in a desperate attempt to protect Coco, is struck by the dragon’s tail (Episode 4) and sent plummeting into the depths of a treacherous maze. Just as hope seems lost, Qifrey appears from thin air. Hovering effortlessly mid-air with Agott in his arms, he neutralizes and overpowers the dragon with terrifying grace. How? He summons a massive fire dragon with his magic, easily twenty times the size of their attacker, to completely dominate the battlefield.

This moment makes us wonder about the power system in the show. It establishes that while the girls are learning the alphabet of magic, Qifrey is writing masterpieces. It also raises the question of why a wizard of his caliber chooses to live in a humble cottage, training young kids’ magic instead of sitting at the top of the magical hierarchy. Episode 5 offered a beautiful look at what makes Witch Hat Atelier unique: the philosophy of magic. Caught in a maze with a dragon, Coco, Agott, Tetia, and Richeh decide against a direct attack. In a display of “unconventional wizardry,” the four girls combine their skills to create a sand-based cloud cushion.

The logic was pure Coco: instead of hurting the dragon, they wanted to give it a place to rest so they could slip away. It was an act of empathy that defines the core of this series. Magic isn’t just a weapon; it’s a tool for comfort and problem-solving. This magical cloud-cushion sequence highlighted the teamwork between the four apprentices, showing how Tetia’s optimism, Richeh’s focus, Agott’s precision, and Coco’s outside-the-box thinking can create something beautiful.

Unfortunately, empathy doesn’t always stop a hungry dragon. When the spell shattered and the dragon resumed its hunt, the shift from cozy fantasy to survival horror was jarring in the best way possible. It proved that in this universe, having a good heart isn’t enough; you need the strength to back it up.

In the end, Episode 5 works because it is both beautiful and revealing. It gives us a peaceful spell in the middle of danger, a frightening reminder of the Brimmed Caps’ reach, and one unforgettable glimpse of Qifrey’s true strength.
