The Devil Wears Prada sequel has arrived in theaters 20 years after the first movie. The original movie is an all-time classic workplace comedy, the iconic lines of which have been etched into our memories. The story follows Anne Hathaway‘s Andy Sachs, who lands a job as assistant to Meryl Streep‘s Miranda Priestly. What begins as a fish-out-of-water comedy gradually becomes something more layered.

Streep’s character, modeled after Vogue’s Anna Wintour, became one of the most iconic movie characters ever. She is terrifying, yet unexpectedly sympathetic. Her insults have been repeated in some fun settings and memes over the years. And then there is Emily Blunt’s deeply passionate but flawed assistant to Miranda, who also dropped some banger lines. Here are some of the most iconic lines from the 2006 movie.
1 “Details of your incompetence do not interest me.”
Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada | Credits: 20th Century StudiosMeryl Streep’s entry as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada is still remembered as one of the best opening scenes for a character. This character intro builds her up as a scary boss, and the employees all run in different directions to make everything look perfect for Miranda. When she enters the office, she is met by her assistant Emily. She complains about how her appointment didn’t come through.
Emily starts making some excuse, but Miranda clearly doesn’t have time for such excuses. It is at this point that she drops the line, “The details of your incompetence do not interest me.” Miranda doesn’t care if there is a rationale behind your actions. She wants you to do all the tasks she assigned you. Even the seemingly impossible ones!
2 “Is there some reason that my coffee isn’t here? Has she died or something?”
Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada | Credits: 20th Century StudiosMiranda Priestly significantly lacks empathy, which makes her kind of the antagonist of the original movie. She has little care for her employees and drops lines like this when things don’t get done in time. The question comes after Andy is sent out for a bunch of errands and isn’t back on time. Miranda comes looking for her coffee, which was one of Andy’s tasks.
It isn’t just that line that paints a picture of Miranda’s savage attitude. When Andy returns, Emily tells her that she had been holding in her pee while Andy was gone, just so she could be present in case Miranda needed anything. Seems a little too extreme, doesn’t it?
3 “You don’t deserve them. I mean, you eat carbs, for Christ’s sake!”
Emily Blunt as Emily in The Devil Wears Prada | Credits: 20th Century StudiosYou will have to agree that Emily Blunt‘s assistant was still a likeable, funny character despite her jealousy towards Andy. We feel for the character, as Miranda ignores her despite all her hard work and passion. At one point, Emily gets hit by a car and is hospitalized. Andy visits her at the hospital and tells her the news that Miranda has chosen Andy to accompany her to Paris.
Emily is heartbroken to learn that Andy accepted Miranda’s offer. She vents out her frustration, during which she drops this iconic line, “You don’t deserve them. I mean, you eat carbs, for Christ’s sake!” referring to all the clothes that Emily was supposed to get. The line was the movie’s little self-aware joke about the fashion industry’s destructive dietary habits.
4 “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking.”
Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada | Credits: 20th Century StudiosMiranda’s dry sarcasm line has turned into a major fashion meme over the years. During a Runway meeting, an employee suggests a floral design for their spring collection. You don’t mention such boring and recycled ideas to Miranda. And you won’t get a simple ‘no’ for an answer either. Miranda’s sarcastic insult immediately wipes away the employee’s confidence.
Over the years, whenever an old trend reemerges, people couldn’t help but think about Miranda’s insulting line. It has also become an expression of exhaustion towards the popular trends. “A ‘day in my life’ that looks exactly like everyone else’s? Groundbreaking.” And many more!
5 “By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.”
Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada | Credits: 20th Century StudiosAnother sarcastic line from Miranda that highlights her need for higher standards around her. When Miranda asks Andy for something, she searches her bag to retrieve it. However, Miranda isn’t happy as she thinks Andy isn’t moving fast enough for her. She mocks Andy with the line, “By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.”
While her rudeness is unacceptable to some levels, it shows that she is a difficult person to work with because of such high standards. It also shows the relationship between Miranda and Andy. Even though Andy has done several things to impress her, Miranda still holds Andy accountable for every little thing she does.
6 “Everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us.”
Anne Hathaway as Andy in The Devil Wears Prada | Credits: 20th Century StudiosIn one of the more vulnerable moments in the movie, Andy and Miranda have a conversation about the reason behind her actions. Andy had changed a lot since she joined the office, even making some calculated moves to replace Emily. Miranda sees some of her cruel methods in Andy and opens up to her about it. When Andy says she doesn’t know whether this is the kind of life she wants, Miranda pushes that notion down.
She tells her not to be ridiculous and shares that everybody wants to be like Miranda and Andy. It is one of the more influential lines from the movie, which touches upon the themes of ambition and the hidden cost of chasing success at someone else’s pace. Streep’s character firmly believes in what she said, but Andy isn’t sure if that’s the advice she needed.
7 “Please bore someone else with your questions.”
Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada | Credits: 20th Century StudiosDon’t ask Miranda questions! When she asks you to do something, even if the instructions aren’t clear, you just have to figure it out. When Miranda gives Andy a pretty complex task of getting skirts from Calvin Klein, Andy wants a little more clarity to fulfill Miranda’s task. However, Miranda immediately dismisses her with the line, “Please bore someone else with your questions.”
Miranda wants things done quickly and efficiently, and expects certain standards and initiative from the people working under her. Some people hate her rudeness and dismissive attitude, while others defend her actions, saying the industry she works in needs a bit of that attitude to work properly.
8 “I love my job. I love my job. I love my job.”
Emily Blunt as Emily in The Devil Wears Prada | Credits: 20th Century StudiosEmily Blunt’s Emily Charlton isn’t treated well in The Devil Wears Prada. She gives her all to the company, but receives constant ridicule from Miranda. When she gets sick, she still comes to work without taking a day off. However, Miranda doesn’t care, and she is annoyed that Emily is sick. When Emily comes back to her desk and asks Andy to step in to help, she is clearly shown to be exhausted with her work.
At this point, Emily delivers this funny line, “I love my job. I love my job. I love my job.”, almost reassuring herself that she was there because she loved the job. It has gone on to become a meme among white-collar workers in the workplace. It also proves why many fans love Emily Charlton more than Anne Hathaway’s Andy.
9 “That’s all”
Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada | Credits: 20th Century Studios With a simple two-word line, The Devil Wears Prada managed to establish Miranda’s care-free, dismissive attitude as a boss. The sassy line is one of the most memorable quotes from the movie. A fan-made compilation would show you the number of times Miranda used it in different styles and inflections to shut down one of her employees.
However, it also turns warmer towards the end of the movie. When Andy delivers up to her expectations, Miranda’s “That’s all” has a tone of appreciation. Meryl Streep’s delivery gets all the credit for how the two words created such an impact in pop culture. We will hear more versions of it in the new sequel to the movie.
10 “Alright, everyone! Gird your loins.”
Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling in a still from The Devil Wears Prada | Credits: 20th Century StudiosThe line is almost a war cry from Stanley Tucci‘s Nigel to the entire office. They are about to face the formidable force: their boss, Miranda. “Gird your loins” prepares you for the entry of cinema’s most terrifying boss. Once, Tucci’s character delivers the line, Andy watches everyone in the office getting frazzled over the arrival of their boss.
Emily runs to Miranda’s office to pour a drink. People run around the office to arrange files and other things. Some change their shoes, while others put on more lipstick to appear presentable. Over the years, “Gird your loins” has become interchangeable with the phrase “Get ready for the challenge everyone.”
