DC’s Supergirl movie has only just landed in theaters, and fans are already looking ahead to Milly Alcock‘s next outing as Kara Zor-El. DC Studios has yet to announce a sequel. But director Craig Gillespie has already expressed interest in returning. The filmmaker said (via Playlist):
Obviously, I’d love to work with Milly again. I loved creating this character with her. We’ll see what happens.
That leaves Kara’s future in an interesting position: a second solo film isn’t confirmed, but all signs point to her remaining one of the DCU‘s central heroes. We know James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-CEOs of DC Studios, have plans for Supergirl as she is one of DCU’s flagship superheroes. Here’s everything we know so far.

A Supergirl Sequel Depends on the Box Office

It is likely that a sequel to the movie will depend on the box office performance. The reviews are mixed (57% on Tomatometer as of June 27 after 254 reviews), and it is the first DCU project to not be “Fresh”. FandomWire gave it a mostly positive 7/10 review. It, then, becomes imperative that it at least grosses enough for it to break even. James Gunn has said that he is prioritizing quality over scheduling, so movies will not automatically get sequels. There has to be audience demand and, presumably, a good script.
That said, it is worth reiterating that Supergirl is a significant part of DCU’s first chapter, Gods and Monsters. Kara is a fairly recognizable hero (though not as much as the trinity of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman), and even negative reviews admit that Alcock was great in the role. The movie had a definitive ending; she also reconciled with her past and present and returned to the Earth. So, there’s definitely scope for more.
Milly Alcock Is Already Confirmed for Two More DCU Films
Milly Alcock’s Supergirl reunites with David Corenswet’s Superman | Credits: Warner Bros.Even if the sequel to Supergirl is not immediately greenlit (or not greenlit at all), we will not have to wait too long to see Alcock portray Kara again. 2027’s Man of Tomorrow, which is the first true team-up movie of DCU, is one of Alcock’s upcoming movies. Superman and his nemesis Lex Luthor are forced to cooperate against a greater threat.
After Man of Tomorrow, she will be seen next in another not-yet-revealed project. Executive producer Lars P. Winther teased Kara Zor-El’s long-term future in the DCU.
He said (via The Hollywood Reporter):
Man of Tomorrow, which is what we’re shooting now, [Alcock] is in that movie. Without giving too much away, this movie ends a particular way, and you see where she’s going to end up. She’s done her wild ways, and now she’s going to try to get back in with her cousin and be more on Earth again. That’s where she is in Man of Tomorrow. It’s all more Earth-based. So we have Man of Tomorrow, and we already know what the next movie’s going to be after that, and she’s a big part of that.
Could that mystery movie after Man of Tomorrow be Justice League? We can hope, can’t we? Even if we don’t know what the project is, one thing is clear: it is central to DC Studios’ plans beyond her solo debut.
Do you think Supergirl deserves a sequel, or should DC Studios focus on Kara’s role in crossover films first? Let us know in the comments.
Supergirl is currently running in theaters right now. It released on June 26.
