Why Project Hail Mary Won’t Be Getting a Streaming Premiere on Amazon Prime Video

Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary has been one of Amazon MGM’s big theatrical flexes of 2026, so anyone would think its streaming debut would be a no-brainer for Prime Video. Instead, the sci‑fi hit is skipping a Prime-first release and landing on the much smaller MGM+ service on June 18, and that twist is very much by design, not a snub or a misfire.

Amazon MGM rolled out Project Hail Mary the old‑school way: a full theatrical run starting March 20, followed by a premium VOD release on May 12, before it heads into its subscription “pay‑one” window on MGM+. A new report from Deadline explains that this film wasn’t greenlit as a straight-to-Prime play, but as a traditional studio title with a full revenue stack

Project Hail Mary will stream first on MGM+ starting June 18, after a roughly 90‑day theatrical window, with no simultaneous drop into the regular Prime catalog. Viewers can still get to MGM+ through Prime as a paid add‑on channel, but that’s a separate subscription tier, meaning it won’t be included in your standard Prime Video bundle the way a lot of Amazon originals are.

Why the split? Amazon MGM is reportedly running a “horses for courses” strategy: some projects are built from day one as Prime Video drivers, while others are engineered to feed MGM+ and support a more traditional theatrical pipeline. Prime‑funded movies like Red One or Air have gone from theaters to Prime with much shorter exclusive windows (via Deadline).

Project Hail Mary, by contrast, was treated as a prestige theatrical bet that earned its keep at the box office, racking up around $680.2 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo, as of June 11, 2026) and ranking among 2026’s top three releases, before being used to strengthen MGM+.

The good news for Prime loyalists is that the Ryan Gosling-starrer is reportedly set to move to Prime Video later, once MGM+ has had its exclusive run and squeezed the maximum value from Ryland Grace’s mission to save the sun.
