In an exclusive red carpet interview with People, Christopher Meloni, who plays Elliot Stabler, was directly questioned about the decision to cut the intimacy from the infamous kitchen sequence. The actor offered a brief, two-word response regarding the situation and said:

Christopher Meloni has spoken at length at other events about the broader creative struggles surrounding Benson and Stabler’s ‘will they, won’t they’ dynamic.

According to Meloni, the actors lack the final say in the editing room, and they try their best to perform the scenes honestly, without simply baiting the audience. He acknowledged during an interview with TV Line Spotlight in 2025, ahead of the premiere of Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5:

Guys, we were attempting something. I don’t think it worked, but I’m not going to tell you why it didn’t work. Have your opinion.

He added:

I know what transpired. We don’t have that power. We do the best we can to be honest with the scenes we’re given. We’re doing the best we can to make it honest, not make it baited. If we do bait, at least for me, I always do it with a wink.

Mariska Hargitay also chimes in about cutting the “kiss” scene to The Hollywood Reporter, noting that while she and Meloni felt the intimate moment was “earned” after so many years of shared history, Dick Wolf definitively vetoed the kiss in the editing room. Despite these setbacks, both actors remain dedicated to infusing authenticity into their performances, even if the final broadcast aligns with a different executive vision than theirs.
