With the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2, Meryl Streep is all over the feed with press tours and interviews, but what caught fans’ attention is quite important. The Oscar-winning actor recently gained traction for a comment she made in an interview with Hits Radio UK.
Streep sat down with her co-stars, Anne Hathaway, who plays Andrea, and Emily Blunt, who plays Emily, when the interviewer asked a question about her character in the sequel, and Streep responded, telling Hits Radio UK:
I think we tend to Marvel-ize the movies now. We got the villains and we got the good guys, and it’s so boring.
But what did the actress mean by this? Does Streep have a particular dislike of Marvel movies? Let’s find out.
What Did Meryl Streep Say About Marvel Movies?
A still from The Devil Wears Prada | Credits: Fox 2000 PicturesFortunately, Marvel fans can rest up as she did not specifically mention the movies, just the tendency of how everything is “Marvel-ized”. The interviewer shared an observation that they believe a softer side of Miranda Priestly could be seen in the sequel.
Streep was answering a question about her character and not taking a dig at the cinematic universe per se. The actress meant that complicated characters don’t necessarily exist, as she explained,
What’s really interesting about life is that some of the heroes are flawed and some of the villains are human and interesting and have their own strengths. So that’s what I like about this [movie]. It’s messier.
Streep has years of experience as an actress in the industry and has seen many characters being built and broken. According to Streep, this is how the industry, like Marvel, creates characters that are merely defined as good people or bad people.
Is Meryl Streep Wrong About Marvel?
Streep isn’t entirely wrong, as she is not saying that Marvel movies are bad. The actress is exposing the industry’s inclination to create heroes and villains, which she personally finds boring.
Her opinion is disliking the simplicity that comes with the cinematic universe’s characters. Her character Miranda would neither be a Marvel hero nor villain, which is what the actress was likely trying to express.
Streep’s comment comes on a day that actually could have been exciting for Marvel fans as Avengers: Doomsday was previously slated to release on May 1, 2026. It was postponed to December 2026 due to the studios requiring more time “to execute on a gargantuan vision,” as reported by Deadline.
Although not intentional, it would be a Miranda Priestly move to grab the MCU movie’s original release slot and have The Devil Wears Prada 2‘s release on May 1.
Additionally, Streep also shared her thoughts on Artificial Intelligence in the interview, when asked if Miranda would be using AI. She shared that the character would be aware of it, but she would have assistants to do that. After Hathaway shared a story of how people she had tried to hire had all sent the same notes using ChatGPT, Streep said,
Don’t let the human get away girls.
The Oscar-winning actress commented on Marvel and AI in the same interview, sharing how she likely wanted the industry to be in the future. Her statement proves why characters that are as complex as Miranda need to exist in the film industry.
Is Streep in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
