Game of Thrones‘ The Mountain is famous for his brute strength and unimaginable power, and is often regarded as one of the most notorious knights. The actor playing the character, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson is no less than the character himself but is a Strongman whom many consider one of the strongest men to have ever lived.
However, in a surprising twist of fate, when going against a significantly lighter opponent weighing nearly 190 pounds less than him, he tapped out. This surprising moment proves that in grappling, technique often trumps sheer size and power.
When Game of Thrones’ The Mountain tapped out against a significantly smaller opponent
The Mountain, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, is known for his towering presence and legendary strength, earning fame as the world’s strongest man and for his role as Ser Gregor Clegane in Game of Thrones. However, even giants sometimes face challenges and have to admit defeat.
This happened when ‘Thor’ Björnsson competed against the American submission wrestler and third-degree Brazillian jiu-jitsu blackbelt Gordon Ryan. In a video going viral on X, the difference in their physicalities can be clearly seen since the Icelander is six-foot-nine and at his prime weighed more than 430 pounds (via Men’s Health), while Ryan stands six-foot-two and weighed more than 240 pounds (via MMA Mania).
In the video, originally shared by the Game of Thrones star himself back in December 2022 on Instagram, The King, using a combination of techniques quickly overpowered the Strongmen and had him breathless in a couple of minutes. Eventually, The Mountain tapped out unable to take it in. Hence, no matter the size, sometimes the right technique and tact can win over even the mightiest of opponents.
What Gordon Ryan and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson had to say about their bout?
While this wasn’t the first time that Gordon Ryan went against an opponent bigger than his size, it was certainly a great deal since he was against a man who is widely considered by many as the greatest strongman to have ever lived. Thus, he did have a lot to say about their surprisingly friendly bout.
In an interview with The MMA Hour, The King stated,
This is actually perfect for me because now whenever I get into an argument with an idiot who’s like, ‘I’m just too strong for that s**t to work on me.’ I can be like, well, I literally grappled the strongest person on the planet, and I can assure you that it worked…
Although Ryan later acknowledged that it was the dumbest and riskiest choice of his career since he had a match the very next day. Meanwhile, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson in his Instagram post remarked that he got humbled quite badly and that it was great to have met Ryan.
