Mads Mikkelsen is not just a bad boy in films, his fans celebrate him as a bad boy in real life too. Mikkelsen is often captured in media with a cigarette in his hand. The actor himself once admitted that he was stuck with his smoking habit and finds it hard to put down his cigarette. Some alleged that Mikkelsen may have even influenced the rising number of smokers in Denmark.
He was first noticed for his role as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale as a Bond villain. He went on to play other villains including Hollywood’s infamous cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter. His most recent film role was another villain performance, voicing the role of Kiros in Mufasa: The Lion King.
Mads Mikkelsen and his smoking habit might come across as a bad influence
Denmark is infamous for its smoking population but Mads Mikkelsen won’t probably do anything about it. Mikkelsen has a unique fanbase who loves to see the villain actor with a cigarette in his hand. While fans are aware of the negatives of this habit, some couldn’t help but admit that the actor looked cool while smoking.
This might be a baseless number, but some fan pages attribute a 1000% increase in smoking among the population of Copenhagen to Mikkelsen (via @welcome.jpeg/Instagram). It is true that Mikkelsen would love to smoke when doing interviews and appearing in front of the paparazzi. During an interview with GQ, he asked the interviewer, “Would you like to see me smoke a cigarette outside?”
It is such an odd question but there are entire galleries dedicated to pictures of the actor smoking. It was also rumored that Mikkelsen would request his directors to include scenes of him smoking in his films. According to the GQ interviewer, Mikkelsen started smoking in the ’80s and it appears to have no effects on him.
The fan comments on photos of the actor smoking range from calling him cool to passing thirsty remarks. Other comments also reflected the actor’s influence on his fans in this matter. Some of the fan reactions online read:
Mikkelsen has maintained his physicality, especially his famous cheekbones, despite his alleged chain-smoking. During his GQ interview, the actor shared that he would love to quit the habit but was stuck in it for too long.
Mads Mikkelsen also commented on Denmark’s anti-smoking campaign
Mads Mikkelsen’s smoking aside, Denmark really has a problem of chain smoking among its people. The government brought about an effective ad as part of the anti-smoking campaign. The said ad shows an apple with saggy skin, representing the change in physicality of a chain smoker. Mikkelsen shared about the ad:
The GQ interviewer also noted that there was nothing utilitarian about the way Mikkelsen smoked. He shared that the actor did so cinematically, which earned him fans for the habit. The interviewer’s description said, “The way his skin stretches over his cheekbones makes every inhale look well-composed.”
Mikkelsen is ready to take his next step in films, venturing into filmmaking. His directorial debut Dust Bunny will see him joining forces with Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller.
