MrBeast is quite literally the biggest YouTuber in the world, holding more than 300 million subscribers to his account, and yet, even he hasn’t been barred from controversy and backlash. While he has made his television debut as well, with his Amazon Prime show Beast Games, the media personality has been met with quite the criticism.
Turns out, even though his game promises a prize of $5 million to the winning contestant, making it the biggest prize in streaming and television history, it’s not all as sweet as it looks. This comes in light of the five alarming allegations that five unhappy contestants had against his game in a lawsuit filed by those very contenders. Here’s a brief dive into it the same.
MrBeast is facing alarming allegations for Beast Games
Even though the prize is considerably rewarding for the Beast Games competition that has the contestants competing in “nail-biting, physical, mental, and social challenges” where “week by week, contestants will use their strength and wit to stay in the game, with the hope of being the multi-million-dollar winner,” the stakes to earn it seem to be quite high.
According to reports from The Independent, the YouTuber is facing a lawsuit lodged by five discontent contenders of the game which reportedly has allegations ranging along the lines of minimum wages, s-xual harassment, emotional distress, adequate breaks, meals, and basic hygiene, and exposure to dangerous situations and positions.
Reportedly, MrBeast and Amazon failed to pay minimum wages and overtime; failed to prevent sexual harassment; subjected the players to “infliction of emotional distress”; did not provide meal breaks, rest breaks, or access to basic hygiene; and the contestants were exposed to “dangerous circumstances and conditions as a condition of their employment.”
1 Beast Games reportedly refused adequate meals, breaks, and basic hygiene requirements
As per The New York Times‘ reports, the contestants of this very game did not have sufficient access to food and medical care. As reportedly described by multiple different contestants, one meal included a small portion of cold oatmeal and a few pieces of raw vegetables, coupled with a single hard-boiled egg, and this meal was given to them twice a day.
When the contestants sought out the staff for assistance with medical care, food, and hygiene problems, they were reportedly met with negligent responses. Even a lengthy report from Las Vegas 3 News reported that the staff working on the show called it “beyond embarrassing,” while adding that it was the most “unprofessional” production they had ever worked on.
2 MrBeast and Amazon are also reportedly being sued for s-xual harassment
Besides the medical care and hygiene problems, MrBeast and Amazon are also facing allegations of s-xual harassment, as reported by Variety. As per the lawsuit, Amazon and MrBeast’s production company failed to prevent s-xual harassment on the show.
A separate plaintiff, identified only as “Contestant 5”, reportedly complained: “As one of the women, I can say it absolutely felt like a hostile environment for us. We honestly could not have been respected less – as people, much less employees – if they tried.” But even this reported workplace harassment wasn’t all.
3 Amazon and MrBeast also reportedly failed to pay minimum wages
According to further allegations in the lawsuit, as reported by Variety, both Amazon and MrBeast’s production company hadn’t been all that fair with the wages either. The suit alleges that they reportedly failed to pay minimum wages and overtime, thus garnering yet another major reason to be sued by the unhappy contestants.
4 Beast Games reportedly inflicted “emotional distress” on the contestants
Per the suit, while the game did warn about the “nail-biting, physical, mental, and social challenges” that the contestants would have to face in the show, the players still complained about it subjecting them to “infliction of emotional distress.”
Reportedly, the contestants allege that while they did sign up for a “potentially long and challenging competition,” what they ended up facing was a lot more than what they had bargained for.
5 Beast Games allegedly exposed contestants to dangerous situations and positions
While the emotional distress element was one thing, further allegations made it worse as the contenders alleged that the show exposed them to dangerous situations. A statement by the attorneys for the anonymous contestants reportedly read:
Of course, all of these allegations are extreme, and if proven right, they could land the YouTuber in some serious trouble. At the same time, it’s worth noting that the media personality did respond to these allegations through his social media handle, writing (per The Independent),
As believable as all of these claims seem, it’s yet to be determined if Amazon and MrBeast are rightly accused of having the contestants of Beast Games go through misery and if all of these allegations are true. For now, only time can tell how much truth there is to this controversial situation which is currently painting the YouTuber in black.
Beast Games can currently be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
